Timothy Van-Orden, Delray Beach, Florida Bicyclist, Killed in Collision with Drew Blazure

Timothy Van-Orden of Delray Beach, Florida was killed after driver Drew Blazure allegedly hit his bicycle, news sources report. Orden, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. It is not clear whether Blazure, 24, of Clinton, New Jersey, was hurt. Police are currently conducting an investigation into the crash. It is too early to tell whether police will file charges or whether the victim’s family will file for damages.

According to reports, the crash occurred in the morning hours of Saturday along the 6700 block of North Federal Highway in Boca Raton. Federal Highway has four lanes, including a bike lane in some portions. The opposing lanes of the highway are separated by a small grassy median.

Reports say Van-Orden was using the bike lane on the southbound side of the highway just before the accident. Blazure was southbound in his 2007 Honda on the highway as well. It is not clear how the accident occurred, but Van-Orden was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, sources indicate.

Bicyclists have little protection against car crashes, making them especially susceptible to injury or death. In 2010, four bicyclists were killed and 364 were injured in crashes in Palm Beach County, the FLHSMV indicates. The number of bicyclist fatalities was down from 2009, during which 11 fatalities and 335 injuries were incurred, records show. Adhering to traffic laws, as well as wearing helmets and other safety gear, can help ensure safety for bicyclists on the road.

Surrounding counties show similar fatality and injury levels for bicyclists. Last month, Robert Rogers of Hollywood was killed when he was struck by SUV driver Farah Brown, news sources report. 67-year-old Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Police reportedly conducted an investigation to determine what factors led to the fatal accident, and Brown was not charged with a crime.

Reports say the crash occurred near the intersection of South 24th Terrace and Rodman Street in Hollywood, relatively close to Roger’s home. Both streets have two lanes. Traffic on either side of Rodman Street has to halt for a stop sign before crossing or entering the intersection, sources indicate.

At around 7:21 p.m., Brown was traveling north in her 2008 Suzuki XL7 SUV on South 24th Terrace, reports say. Brown reached the intersection and collided with Rogers and his bicycle, sources allege. It was not immediately clear whether Rogers was riding along South 24th Terrace or was attempting to cross the road at the time.

“[Brown] stayed on the scene and from witness reports, it appears to be an unfortunate accident,” a police spokesperson apparently said. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.
