pexels-photo-263402-300x199Federal authorities in Florida have unsealed the indictment of a Florida surgeon accused of bilking the government and health insurers of more than $26 million, which he allegedly planned to use to finance his political career in Ghana.

Dr. Moses deGraft-Johnson was indicted on 58 counts, including health care fraud and conspiracy to commit health care fraud. He was ordered held until his trial date because he was deemed to be a flight risk. Attorney information wasn’t available at the time of writing.

Clifford Carroll of Boca Raton, Florida, was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement as the ringleader of a group that defrauded over $175 million from medical insurance companies. Carroll, 36, and 16 other residents and medical professionals of Broward and Palm Beach counties allegedly prepared and sold specialty prescription creams to patients at inflated prices.

Carroll faces charges for filing a false income tax return and racketeering conspiracy. Seven other suspects—Tim Clinton, Lisa Goldberg, Todd Hanson, Joel McDermott, Todd Stephens, Joel McDermott, and Michael Kenna—face charges for conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The remaining nine—Ian Flaster, Dr. John Johnson, William Earl, Rhett Gordon, Frederick Giampa, Brett Nadel, Christopher Mucha, Kyle O’Brien, and Peter Williams—are being charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud. News sources did not name attorneys for any of the defendants.

Dr. Angel Amado Lazo, 79, the owner of Brothers Medical Center; Clara R. Segura, 43, a therapist; and Arlene Hernandez Garcia, 32, a receptionist, were arrested in Miami, Florida on Monday. The trio was brought in by the Staged Accident Detail, a federal task force of the Miami Police Department that combats medical insurance fraud.

Lazo, Segura, and Garcia face charges for grand theft, organizing a scheme to defraud, and false health insurance claims. It is unclear whether bond has been set for any of the three or if they’ve acquired the services of an attorney.

Gabriela Alegria of Miami, Florida was arrested last Friday for allegedly attempting to illegally inject an undercover agent with Botox. Before her arrest, Alegria, 43, was awaiting sentencing for her involvement in a Medicare fraud case.

Alegria was ordered to be held in lieu of a $50,000 bond during her bond hearing last week with the added stipulation that she remain under house arrest should she post bail. News sources did not specify an attorney for Alegria.
