According to the complaint, Jammeh allegedly acquired millions by embezzling public funds and soliciting bribes from businesses seeking to control various sectors of The Gambia’s economy. The former president purportedly conspired with family members and associates to funnel the money into shell companies and overseas trusts, where it was laundered through the purchase of assets around the world.

abundance-bank-banking-banknotes-259027-300x200A report published by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has revealed that law enforcement agencies in the state seized more than $3.35 million in property using civil asset forfeiture over a period of six months in 2019.

Civil asset forfeiture is a process that allows prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to seize vehicles, cash, and valuables they believe is tied to criminal activity without convicting or even charging the property owner with a crime. Getting back property seized with asset forfeiture usually involves expensive civil litigation.
