Four people were killed on Tuesday after two small airplanes crashed into each other over the Everglades.

According to news reports, people who live around the Everglades heard an explosion at around 1 p.m. and called the police. The airplanes were seen in a remote area accessible only by helicopters and airboats.

Father and son Jose Eduardo Cepeda Luna, 57, and Cesar Eduardo Cepeda, 34, were killed on the morning of February 9 in a hit-and-run crash on the Turnpike in northwest Miami-Dade.

According to FHP investigators, Cesar Cepeda was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup east on SR-836 when he lost control and crashed into a guardrail.

Stranded on the side of the highway, Cepeda called his father, who arrived shortly after in a Chevrolet Equinox. Investigators believe the two men were outside their vehicles when a Chevrolet Camaro hit them.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sibyl Simon of Coral Springs, Florida turned herself in after she was tracked down by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper for allegedly causing a crash on Florida’s Turnpike and fleeing the scene of the accident.

Simon, 38, faces charges for tampering with evidence and criminal mischief. She was released from jail on July 31 after posting $10,000 bond. News sources did not say if she has hired an attorney.

Dean International Flight School in Miami, Florida has been linked to another plane crash in less than two weeks. The crash involved a Cessna 172 airplane carrying a flight instructor and a student; they were forced to crash-land in Key Biscayne after the craft’s engine reportedly lost power last Thursday night. Both men survived the crash with minor injuries.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokeswoman Katheleen Bergen told the press that the aircraft had taken off from Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach and was flying to Miami Executive Airport before it was forced to land. Bergen said the FAA is investigating the crash.

Jean Nicolas crashed a tanker owned by MGM Transport as he was leaving Port Everglades on the night of March 2, sources say. The fully-loaded tanker spilled nearly 9,000 gallons of fuel in front of a storage facility near Terminal 18. The exact cause of the accident is still unclear.

After the tanker rolled over, Nicolas, who was trapped in the cabin, managed to get out by breaking the back window and crawling to safety. He did not suffer any serious injuries, but was taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment of some bruises and cuts.
