Shoshana R. Stern of Boca Raton, Florida was killed while riding her skateboard on Sunday, news sources report. Stern, 12, was struck by Marvin S. James’s car while riding her skateboard across West Palmetto Park Road. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. So far, James, 24, of West Palm Beach has not been charged with a crime. It is unclear whether Stern’s family will file a suit.
According to reports, the accident occurred at the intersection of Boca Del Mar Drive and West Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton. West Palmetto Park Road is a six-lane expressway with a grassy median in its center. Traffic coming from Boca Del Mar Drive has to stop for a stop sign before turning onto West Palmetto Park Road. There is also a crosswalk extending from west to east side of Boca Del Mar Drive.
At around 7:00 Sunday evening, Stern was riding her skateboard across West Palmetto Park Road from the south to north side, reports say. At the same time, James was westbound in his 2005 Ford Mustang on West Palm Beach Road. Maryanne E. Diener, 23, was a passenger in James’s vehicle at the time. When James attempted to turn onto Boca Del Mar Drive, he reportedly struck Stern.
Paramedics pronounced Stern dead at the scene. Police are conducting an investigation to determine whether James was at fault in the collision; so far, there have been no charges. Denise Stern, Stern’s mother, said her daughter was a “happy girl. She’s a light,” the mother said, “She’s a love. [She] could have accomplished a lot.”
Stern was not the only South Florida pedestrian killed in a collision recently. A Fort Lauderdale man lost his life in a pedestrian car accident on Tuesday, reports say. The victim was reportedly struck by a car while crossing Powerline Road. The driver remained on the scene following the accident and appears to be cooperating with authorities. Information regarding the driver and victim’s identity was not immediately available following the crash. Police are currently conducting an investigation and have not said whether the driver will be charged or cited.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 8:20 Tuesday evening on North Powerline Road in Fort Lauderdale. Powerline Road has four lanes of traffic; a grassy median lies in the middle of portions of the road.
The victim was attempting to cross the street from the east side when a northbound Mazda SUV struck him. It is not clear whether the victim was using a crosswalk. Paramedics transported the victim to the Broward Health Medical Center following the crash; sadly, doctors pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival. Police have withheld the victim’s identity until his next of kin is notified of the death.
Detectives say the Mazda’s driver is complying with a traffic homicide investigation. So far, there have been no indications of whether detectives plan to press charges.
Hundreds of pedestrians are injured in Palm Beach County traffic accidents every year, sources show. In 2010, 550 pedestrians were injured and 21 killed in traffic accidents.
