Roosevelt Franklin of Gainesville, Florida Arrested for Domestic Battery

Roosevelt Franklin of Gainesville, Florida was arrested Sunday after he was accused of assaulting his live-in partner over a dispute about what to watch on TV, news sources report. Franklin, 52, was booked into the Alachua County Jail on charges of resisting arrest without violence and domestic felony battery. A judge set his bail bond at $50,000. Reports did not say whether Franklin has hired a defense attorney.

According to reports, Franklin and the victim, who remains anonymous in public reports, have been cohabitating for nearly two decades. Following the incident, the victim reportedly told officers that Franklin had assaulted her numerous times in the past but that she hadn’t reported the incidents. Arrest records allegedly show that Franklin has had five previous convictions on battery-related charges, though it is not known whether any of those convictions were for battery against the victim in this case.

The trouble began on Sunday evening, when Franklin and the victim were arguing about what to watch on TV. The altercation eventually turned physical when Franklin “grabbed her hair from behind and smashed her head against the living room wall at least three times, causing contusions to both her right eye and forehead,” reports say.

It is not clear from the report who called police. In any case, they showed up and found the victim with head injuries and a laceration to her shin, sources say. Franklin denied assaulting the victim and reportedly said she had probably fallen over and hurt herself while drunk. Franklin did say the victim and another witness would not let him watch TV in peace, reports say.

The responding officer attempted to place Franklin under arrest, but he resisted at first, sources allege. It is unclear whether the victim will press charges or file a restraining order against Franklin.

In a similar case earlier this year, Marjorie Maradiaga of Key West was arrested after she allegedly assaulted her ex-boyfriend and his brother, reports say. Maradiaga, 24, was apprehended on charges of domestic child neglect, battery, battery on law enforcement officers, resisting arrest with violence, and violating a domestic violence injunction. It is unknown whether she qualified for bail or hired legal representation.

Reports say Maradiaga and her ex have an 11-month-old daughter. After the couple separated, the former boyfriend filed a domestic violence injunction against Maradiaga, the details of which are currently unknown. Sources say the man did so as a precaution: “The [ex-boyfriend] said Maradiaga threatened to drown their daughter several months before and he said he fears for the child’s safety,” a police email reportedly said.

At around 9:00 on a Monday evening, Maradiaga allegedly got into a heated argument with the ex-boyfriend. At some point during the dispute, Maradiaga chased the victim down a street and punched and bit him, reports say. Officer’s arrived at the scene to find Maradiaga holding her daughter; she appeared intoxicated and could not speak clearly, sources allege. Police took the child out of her arms and placed her under arrest.
