Robert Quincey Grant of Coconut Creek, Florida Accused of Molesting Student at Coral Springs Middle School

Robert Quincey Grant of Coconut Creek, Florida is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage student at a school where he worked as a custodian and assistant coach.

Grant, 27, was arrested Tuesday and faces several counts of sexual assault of a minor and lewd or lascivious molestation of a minor. He is being held without bond and was ordered not to have any contact with the victim or any minor. It is unclear if he has hired an attorney.

According to the police report, the alleged sexual assault took place last Saturday night at Coral Springs Middle School, 10300 Wiles Road. Grant, who was a mentor to the teen, reportedly picked the boy up at his home and took him to the school to help him with his homework. As school custodian, Grant had keys that gave him access to the school grounds.

After the boy finished his homework, Grant took him to the school gym to stretch. He instructed the teen to lay down so he could stretch his hamstrings, even though the teen hadn’t asked to be stretched. Grant then pulled down the teen’s shorts and performed oral sex on him, the report said.

The victim told investigators that he “froze” in fear and didn’t react because he didn’t know what Grant would do next. He told detectives that Grant’s inappropriate behavior began months ago when the older man checked on an injury the teen received in the groin region multiple times. Grant allegedly put his hands in the victim’s pants on at least 10 occasions and groped his testicles for a few seconds each time, the boy said.

“They’re supposed to be in a role in a juvenile’s life to provide guidance and support and help them, molding them into adulthood,” said Sgt. Carl Kmiotek of the Coral Springs Police Department in a statement. “Here this person took advantage of the juvenile who had trusted him—trusted him as a coach, as a mentor. It’s very unfortunate.”

Surveillance footage from the school confirms that Grant and the victim were alone at the school on the night of October 14. When questioned by investigators about the assault, Grant admitted to being alone with the victim at the school on Saturday night, but denied the sexual allegations.

Parents and students were shocked by the allegations against Grant.

“I think we need to vet the teachers more or something,” said parent Roberta Carey. “We need more accountability in the schools—these are our kids, this is our future, and we put our trust in these schools to take care of our kids and when we have these teachers that are taking advantage of them, it’s just a sad situation.”

Records from the Broward County Public School District show Grant has worked at the school since 2010. In addition to his work as a custodian, he was also an assistant coach for various sports at the school. School officials said he has been reassigned to work away from students.
