Raul Lopez of Weston, Florida was killed in a rollover crash on Sunday, news sources report. It is unclear whether any other vehicles were involved. Lopez, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. It remains to be seen whether a medical condition or a faulty vehicle played a role in the tragic crash.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 10:30 Friday evening in the 7000 block of U.S. 27 in Weston. Lopez was on his way home in his Toyota pickup and had apparently been on the phone with family just a few minutes prior to the crash. What happened next remains a mystery. Police on their way to a non-related incident spotted Lopez’s pickup in a ditch, sources say.
Lopez was reportedly found near the vehicle; he had been thrown from the truck during the crash, sources indicate. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but, sadly, Lopez was declared deceased at the crash site. Detectives canvassed the area searching for clues. It has not yet been determined whether any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Weston is one of Broward County’s larger cities, with a population of nearly 70,000 people. According to city data statistics, there were four fatal accidents in Weston in 2011. That number was up from 2010, which saw only eight fatal accidents, sources show.
In another example of Broward Country crashes, late last year, a group of four Broward County bicyclists were injured after they were struck by a car while following a route along U.S. 27, sources report. Information regarding the driver and bicyclists’ identities was not immediately available following the incident. Two of the bicyclists sustained critical injuries; all four were taken to the Broward Health Medical Center. It is unclear whether the other driver was criminally charged.
According to reports, the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. on a December Saturday on U.S. 27 near Weston. The bicyclists were traveling as a group in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 at the time, sources say. A car on U.S. 27 apparently struck the bicyclists.
The four bicyclists were rushed to the Broward Health Medical Center. One cyclist was apparently airlifted because of the severity of his or her injuries. Two of the cyclists sustained critical injuries, while the other two sustained less severe wounds, sources indicate. An update on the bicyclists’ conditions was not immediately available at press time.
It is not clear whether the driver remained at the scene, nor is it known whether she or he suffered injuries. It is unclear whether charges were filed.
Bicyclists are especially susceptible to injury in car crashes. When bicyclists get caught up in a crash, they have little in the way of protection besides their helmet. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ records show that 549 bicyclists were injured in Broward County crashes in 2010. Sadly, five Broward County cyclists lost their lives in car accidents that same year. Records show the number of bicyclists injured in 2010 was up by 44 from 2009.
