A Pompano Beach, Florida tow truck/public transit bus collision sent 32 people to area hospitals on Thursday, news sources report. The victims were not immediately available following the incident; they were treated at several area hospitals. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. So far, no charges have been filed. It remains to be seen whether any of the victims will file for damages.
The bus in the case is part of the Broward County Transit system – bus #0736. Sources did not identify the driver by name. The tow truck involved in the crash is reportedly part of Auto Club Towing, which is based off Sheridan Street in Hollywood. The driver of that vehicle has likewise not been identified. Auto Club Towing appears to have remained mum regarding the crash, as has the Broward County Transit system.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 3:45 Thursday afternoon in the 1400 block of West Sample Road in Pompano Beach, near the crossing of Andrews Avenue. Reports say a tow truck was behind the bus in the same lane when it rear-ended the bus. Further details, such as whether the bus was stopping at the time, were not available.
In all, 32 people were injured in the collision; it is unclear how many of them were in the bus or the tow truck. One of the victims apparently sustained serious injuries, while the others sustained more minor injuries. The majority of the victims were taken to Northwest Medical Center, Broward Health North Medical Center, and Broward Health Imperial Point. Nine victims were taken to the Holy Cross Hospital. An update on the victims’ conditions was not immediately available at press time.
Rear-end collisions with buses are common, since buses frequently stop at bus stops to unload and pick up passengers. Earlier this month, a Davie school bus was struck from behind by a pickup truck in a crash that injured four people, two of whom were minors, sources report. The victims’ injuries appear to have been minor. The details of the crash are still under investigation. “The truck driver appeared to be at fault,” a police spokesperson reportedly said of the incident.
The bus in this crash worked for the Davie school district and had 28 kids aboard from Nova Middle and High Schools, sources say. While the details of the accident are still hazy, reports say the pickup truck rear-ended the school bus from behind. Both vehicles remained at the scene.
Two of the children on the bus were injured, sources say. The bus and truck drivers were both injured as well. An update on the conditions of the injured parties was not immediately available. It is similarly unclear how badly the vehicles were damaged in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
While school buses come equipped with a retractable stop sign warning drivers when the vehicle is going to stop, drivers sometimes miss the cue. Drivers are encouraged to pay special attention when traveling near school buses to avoid such problems.
