A Lauderhill, Florida teen, a city police officer, and a woman were injured in two related car accidents on Thursday, news sources report. Information regarding the victims’ identities was not immediately available following the incident. The teen, 14, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center and is in stable condition. A woman was also taken at Broward Health Medical Center, while the officer was taken to the Plantation General Hospital for treatment, sources say. Police are currently conducting an investigation into the accidents. It is unclear whether anyone will file for damages.
According to reports, the accident involving the teen occurred Thursday morning at the intersection of Northwest 19th Street and 46th Avenue in Lauderhill. The intersection is a three-way stop, sources say. The teen was on foot and reportedly may have been on her way to school at the time.
Reports say there were flood warnings in the area that morning, though the crashes seemed to have taken place before the rain started. “At the time, I think the roads were fairly dry,” a police spokesperson supposedly said. Authorities reportedly say the weather likely did not contribute to either crash.
While the exact details of that accident are still somewhat unclear, sources say the teen was struck by a vehicle. It is unclear if the teen was crossing the road at the time. The driver remained at the scene, sources indicate.
A Lauderhill police officer was told to respond to the crash, according to reports. That officer reportedly activated his lights and sirens and started to drive to the accident site. The officer was northbound on State Road 7 when he attempted to make a left turn onto Northwest 19th Street and crashed into another vehicle that was southbound on State Road 7, sources say.
The front of the officer’s vehicle was reportedly damaged. “It looks like there was pretty severe damage to both vehicles,” a Lauderhill Police spokesperson said. “Are they both totaled? I don’t know.”
The officer was taken to the Plantation General Hospital. “The officer is stable with non-life-threatening injuries,” a police spokesperson reportedly said. “I think he’s got leg and back injuries.” The driver of the car that was struck apparently lost consciousness and was taken to Broward Health Medical Center; she has since been released, sources indicate.
The teen struck in the first crash was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center; she was reportedly conscious after the accident. An update on her condition was not immediately available at press time.
Crashes often occur in South Florida, sometimes with fatal results. Earlier this year, Plantation resident Steven Michael Johnson was killed after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a barrier, sources report. Johnson, 42, was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center following the crash; sadly, he died of his injuries. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Reports say the crash occurred around 4:30 Saturday morning on Davie Road near the intersection of State Road 84. Johnson was northbound on Davie Road when he attempted to turn onto SR 84, sources say. For reasons not currently known, Johnson lost control of his 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe and collided with the roadside barrier. He later died at the hospital.
