Palm Beach County, Florida Barge Worker Killed in Worksite Accident

A Palm Beach County, Florida barge worker was killed Thursday after he became trapped in a small cavity on the vessel, news sources report. Information regarding the victim’s identity was not immediately was not immediately available following the crash. Police are currently investigating the accident; it is not clear whether charges or a lawsuit will be filed.

According to reports, the accident occurred in the late morning on Thursday at the Port of Palm Beach. The barge belongs to a contractor currently working on the construction of Slip 3 at the port. The victim was working on the barge when he became trapped in a small cavity on the ship; it is not clear how he got stuck there. Other workers rushed to the victim’s aid and tried to free him, but they were unsuccessful. The victim was later pronounced dead.

Initial reports suggested that the victim had been killed by a chemical emergency, sources say. However, those reporters turned out to be inaccurate. No one else appears to have been injured, though it remains to be seen whether premises liability played a part in the worker’s untimely demise.

In other news, police have released the identity of the passenger killed in the fiery Turnpike accident earlier this month. 28-year-old Nathalie Vazquez of Miramar reportedly died when a car crashed into his parked vehicle, causing it to catch fire. Police are still investigating the incident and have not said whether they will file charges.

Reports say the accident occurred at around 2:45 Saturday evening. Vazquez was in a 2004 Hyundai XG 350 driven by Jeffrey Bryce Jr. when an officer pulled Bryce over in westbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike. Shortly after Bryce pulled over, a westbound 2011 Nissan driven by Evan Rolando Soto approached the scene and crashed into Bryce’s vehicle.

The force of the collision caused the Hyundai to catch fire. Soto and another person pulled Bryce from the burning vehicle, but were unable to get to Vazquez in time. It is unclear whether she was killed in the collision or the resulting fire.

In yet another Turnpike accident, Douglas Wade Allen was killed and Tracy Cender critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Friday, reports say. The accident occurred when Allen lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. Allen, 53, of Royal Palm Beach died in the collision; his passenger, 39-year-old Cender of Wellington, sustained critical injuries. No other vehicles appear to have been involved.

Reports say the accident occurred in the northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike in the Orange County area. Allen was riding his motorcycle, with Cender as his passenger, when he reportedly attempted to change lanes to turn onto the State Road 429 exit and lost control of the bike. The motorcycle veered into a guardrail and Allen and Cender were both thrown from the bike in the collision.

Allen was pronounced dead at the scene; Cender sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. It is unclear whether the two victims were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
