Pablo Zapata Killed, Oscar Zapata, Sonia Escalante Injured in Homestead, Florida Crash

Pablo Zapata, Oscar Zapata, and Sonia Escalante were involved in a Homestead, Florida car crash on Sunday, news sources report. Pablo Zapata, 10, was pronounced dead following the accident. Oscar Zapata, 40, and Escalante, 36, sustained minor injuries and were treated at area hospitals. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation to determine what caused the crash. So far, no charges have been filed.

According to reports, the accident occurred at around 7:00 Sunday evening in the northbound lanes of the Homestead Extension exit ramp, which is connected to the Florida Turnpike. Sources say Zapata lost control of his Mitsubishi Montero while driving around the curve of the ramp, and Zapata’s vehicle left the ramp and rolled down an embankment. The force of the crash ejected the Pablo Zapata from the vehicle; it is unclear whether the boy was wearing his seat belt.

The victim was air-rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, but he ultimately died of his injuries. Zapata and Escalante sustained minor injuries. The FHP is investigating the crash and has not said whether speed played a role in the accident, or whether someone could be charged for not requiring the boy to wear a seat belt.

In other news, Allen J. Vachon and Anwdrea K. Rowe of Hypoluxo were involved in a train collision on Saturday, reports say. Vachon, 57, died in the collision, while Rowe, 37, escaped uninjured. The FHP conducted an investigation and determined that the collision was accidental. No charges have been filed.

Reports say the crash occurred on train tracks that cross Miner Road, just north of the city of Boynton Beach. Vachon’s became disabled on the tracks, and Vachon may have attempted to restart the vehicle moments before the collision. Reports say Rowe exited the vehicle, perhaps having heard the train. The southbound Florida East Coast Railway train collided with Vachon’s van while he was still inside. The train reportedly pushed the van all the way into Boynton Beach. Vachon died in the crash.

Yet another person was injured in a two-vehicle collision in Broward on Saturday, reports say. One person was trapped under their vehicle following the crash. Information regarding the identities of the victims was not readily available following the crash. The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police are currently conducting an investigation, but have not said whether either driver was at fault. So far, no charges have been filed.

Sources say the accident occurred late Saturday in the 300 block of East Dania Beach Boulevard. According to a witness, the two vehicles collided in the parking lot of a Winn Dixie. It appears an SUV may have been pulling out of a parking space when a red two-door car ran into it. The collision left the car partially trapped under the SUV.

Reports say that one of the drivers was somehow trapped under a vehicle following the crash. Rescue crews had to free the victim, who was put on trauma alert and taken to Broward Health Medical Center. It is unclear whether the other driver was injured.
