One Dead and Two Injured in Hollywood, Florida Scaffolding Collapse

Three mural painters were involved in an accident on Monday after a scaffold collapsed from the side of a luxury resort being built in Hollywood, Florida. One of them fell to his death and the other two managed to hang on with safety harnesses 40 feet above the ground.

According to Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue, the accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. on the southern wall of the Hyde Resort & Residences. The three painters were working on an abstract mural designed by Douglas Hoekzema when the scaffolding collapsed, killing one of them and leaving the other two dangling at a dangerous height. Police did not release the identities of the men.

A spokesperson for Hollywood police said a technical rescue team arrived at the scene with a fire engine and 75-foot ladder soon after the accident. The team brought one of the men safely to the ground and the other painter managed to descend on the fire engine’s ladder.

Photographs released by Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue show one of the painters hanging from a cable with his feet wedged in an air vent as he waited for the rescue ladder to reach him. Another photo shows a painter on the ground with a head injury.

Two of the three painters were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where one was pronounced dead and the other remains in critical condition. The third painter was evaluated for injuries on the scene, but it is unclear if he was taken to a hospital for additional treatment.

The contractor building Hyde Resort & Residences was identified as John Moriarty & Associates of Florida, Inc. Representatives from the company could not be reached for comment and an official statement has not been released.

The Hollywood police spokesperson told news sources that Hollywood Fire Rescue inspectors and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are working with police to investigate the incident.
