Nilesh Shetty and Theodora Minkova of Boca Raton, Florida Injured in Collision with Ira Yavarkovsky

Nilesh Shetty, Theodora Minkova, and Ira Yavarkovsky were involved in a Boca Raton, Florida crash Thursday, news sources report. Shetty, 31, and Minkova, 33, were reportedly riding a scooter when Yarvakovsky, 72, struck them with her car. The pair sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Delray Medical Center. Yavarkovsky, of Delray Beach, was not injured. It is too early to tell whether she will be charged or cited for the crash. Police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident. It is unclear whether the victims will file for damages.

According to reports, the collision occurred along the 700 block of West Yamato Road in Boca Raton, between I-95 and Congress Avenue. Yamato Road is a six-lane expressway, centered by a grassy median, that runs the entire width of Boca Raton. According to a City of Boca Crash Report, there were 37 crashes at the intersection of West Yamato Road and Congress Avenue in 2009, making it a high-risk area.

This latest accident occurred around 12:00 Thursday, reports indicate. Sources say Shetty and passenger Minkova were on a 2012 TaoTao scooter traveling eastbound on West Yamato Road. Yavarkovsky was behind the wheel of her 2011 Lincoln, eastbound on Yamato Road. While what happened next is still somewhat unclear, but reports say Yavarkovsky struck Shetty’s scooter.

Shetty and Minkova flew off the scooter, reports say; it is not clear whether they were wearing helmets. The pair sustained critical injuries and was transported to the Delray Medical Center. An update on their condition was not immediately available at press time. Sources say Yavarkovsky was not injured.

So far, it is unclear whether any outside factors played a role in the tragic collision. Detectives are asking anyone with additional details to contact the Boca Raton Traffic Homicide division.

Each year, Palm Beach County is home to thousands of traffic crashes. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 13,410 recorded crashes in Palm Beach County in 2010. That number was significantly higher than the year before, which saw 13,398 recorded traffic crashes. Scooters, motorcycles, and bicycles are particularly dangerous vehicles, since their drivers do not have airbags and other protections associated with other vehicles.

Earlier this month, Palm Beach County resident Antonio S. Lopez was killed in a crash after he drove his scooter on the wrong side of North Federal Highway and crashed into a truck, source say. Lopez, 33, died at the crash site; the driver of the truck, Sanuse Cetoue, was uninjured.

Reports say the fatal crash happened around 3 a.m. Saturday on the Boynton Beach stretch of North Federal Highway. Lopez allegedly drove onto the wrong lanes of North Federal Highway on his 2012 Taiz motor scooter. Cetoue was headed driving in the same lane in his 1997 Toyota 4-Runner, headed the correct direction. Unfortunately, Cetoue did not see Lopez’s vehicle until it was too late. The two vehicles collided and Lopez died at the scene. Police have purportedly said Cetoue will not face charges for the accident.
