Miami Surgeon Ignacio Calvo Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

Miami orthopedic surgeon Ignacio Calvo was arrested on June 16 after police allegedly discovered he downloaded and shared pornography featuring children as young as 2 years old.

Calvo, 89, is being charged with one count of transmitting child pornography and ten counts of possession of child pornography. It is unclear if he is being held on bond. News sources did not say if he has hired a defense attorney.

According to the arrest report, law enforcement agents targeted Calvo after discovering he was sharing at least 13 child porn videos on a sharing network that allows users to swap media files.

Federal agents searched Calvo’s Brickell penthouse and reportedly found at least 10 videos on his laptop depicting children under the age of 14 engaged in various sex acts. When questioned by investigators about the videos, Calvo allegedly admitting to downloading them “years ago.”

Another child pornography arrest was reported in Jupiter, Florida last month. Chad Thomas Gorman of Lake Park was arrested on May 23 after police reportedly found homemade child porn videos on his phone.

Gorman, 34, is being charged with lewd and lascivious behavior with a victim under 12, possession of obscene materials, and having a victim under 12 come in contact with bodily fluids. He is being held without bond. The press did not say if he has acquired legal representation.

According to the police report, investigators gained access to Gorman’s phone after he was arrested on video voyeurism charges at a Wal-Mart in Jupiter. Gorman was reportedly caught taking “upskirt” photos and videos of women shopping in the store by a security guard.

An analysis of Gorman’s phone yielded over 600 images and eight videos. Sources did not say how many were pornographic in nature, but investigators reportedly found a some videos showing Gorman inappropriately touching a little girl and then touching himself in front of her. Those videos led to his arrest on child pornography charges on May 23.

When questioned about the videos, Gorman reportedly told investigators that the girl in the videos was 10 years old and that she was sleeping when he was molesting her. He said the incidents had began eight months ago.

Under Florida law, possession of child pornography is a third-degree felony. Sharing and promoting or producing of child pornography are much more severe offenses. Those convicted of possession of child pornography could face a mandatory prison term of up to 20 years for each offense. Penalties also include heavy fines and a lifetime registration in the National Sex Offender Registry.

Sharing child pornography with another person can upgrade an offender’s charge to a second-degree felony, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Promoting and producing child porn carries the most severe penalties. It can upgraded to a first-degree penalty, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Both state prosecutors and law enforcement officials make a point to ensure anyone suspected of or charged with a sex offense involving a child is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Because of the life-changing consequences of a conviction, it is extremely important to hire an experienced attorney who can guide you through the criminal justice system.
