Miami Lakes Lawyer Marcos Gonzalez-Balboa Arrested on Hit-and-Run Charges

Marcos Gonzalez-Balboa of Hialeah, Florida was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the hit-and-run death of Tatum Holloway of Cape Town, South Africa.

Gonzalez-Balboa, 65, faces charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. He is being held on $75,000 bond. He will be placed on house arrest and won’t be allowed to drive if he manages to post bail. It is unclear if he has sought legal representation.

According to the arrest report, the alleged hit-and-run occurred on Fairway Drive at around 2 a.m. on December 6, 2017. Holloway, 26, was using a crosswalk when the driver of a silver Mercedes Benz crashed into her, throwing her to the side of the road. The driver did not stop to administer aid.

“The victim was vaulted into the air and subsequently landed on the curb, on the west side of Fairway Drive,” Miami-Dade police said. “The driver of the vehicle fled the scene without rendering aid to the victim.”

Holloway was found by a passerby who called 911. She was pronounced dead by first responders.

Gonzalez-Balboa was pulled over by police later that day. It was clear that he had replaced his windshield because there was still tape holding it in place. Without prompt, he reportedly told the police officer that a “coconut hit his windshield.”

He was determined to be the driver who killed Holloway based on evidence collected by police and the FBI. Police found a piece of the front bumper of the vehicle that struck Holloway at the scene, and it allegedly matches Gonzalez-Balboa’s vehicle. FBI confirmed that Gonzalez-Balboa’s cellphone was in the area when the crash occurred.

On the night of the crash, Gonzalez-Balboa racked up a $327 bar tab at Bulla Gastrobar in Coral Gables between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., WPLG Local 10 reports. Receipts the news outlet obtained show he spent $173.36 on his first tab and $153.92 on his second tab. Both tabs included several vodka, tequila, and scotch drinks.

Surveillance footage investigators obtained reportedly shows Gonzalez-Balboa stumbling through a parking garage looking for his vehicle after he left the bar. He had trouble putting a ticket into the device that operates the exit gate, authorities said.

Holloway’s parents filed a wrongful death suit against Gonzalez-Balboa earlier in the week.

“For four months Tatum’s parents waited to learn what happened to their daughter and tonight they finally have some answers,” David Bianchi, the attorney representing the family, said. “The fact that he is a lawyer makes this horrible tragedy all the more outrageous.”

Gonzalez-Balboa is a personal injury attorney with a law firm in Miami Lakes.
