An accident on Interstate-95 on Monday caused 55,000 pounds of beer cargo to spill on the highway, forcing cleanup crews to work for seven hours, according to news reports. The truck was reportedly driven by Marcos Martinez, 46, who told authorities that he had been forced to swerve to avoid a vehicle, causing the accident. No arrests have been made as police continue to conduct an investigation into the incident. No one was hurt, according to news reports.
The accident apparently occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Monday on Interstate 95, near LPGA Boulevard in Volusia County. Martinez alleged that he was driving northbound in the right lane of the interstate when a tractor-trailer driving in the center lane suddenly swerved into his lane. Martinez says that he was forced to veer to the right in order to avoid a collision, and that he subsequently lost control of the vehicle.
The truck, according to the news release by the Florida Highway Patrol, drove in a ditch near the right lane for approximately 660 feet, then came back onto the freeway and flipped onto its’ passenger side, sliding for 200 feet. Its cargo, comprised of 55,000 pounds of Heineken and Amstel Light, spilled across northbound lanes of the freeway. Many of the bottles reportedly shattered and spilled on the roadway. There is no indication that any of the product was salvageable. The financial implications of the crash have not been made public, and it is not clear whether the maker of the beer will be pursuing damages.
The cleanup efforts reportedly lasted until 10:45 a.m. on Monday. Simultaneously, investigators started to search for evidence. The Florida Highway Patrol indicates that there were no skid marks on the highway that indicated that another car swerved. No witnesses were reportedly available, although investigators are no doubt searching for anyone who may have seen the accident.
Although no one was injured in this particular crash, several recent area car accidents did not turn out so well for the persons involved. One was a three-vehicle car accident that reportedly took place last night at approximately 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of Boca Del Mar Drive and Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton. The collision involved seven people and three vehicles, according to news reports. Of the seven, two people were reportedly able to walk away from the crash unharmed. The remaining five went to area hospitals for treatment, although none of them are believed to be in critical condition. None of the names and ages of the victims is known, nor are the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are reportedly still trying to determine the causes of the accident. No charges have been filed as of now, sources indicate.
Another area accident that also, by coincidence, involved seven people occurred over the weekend at the Florida Turnpike. In that accident, all seven victims were taken to area hospitals, three with what were reported to be serious injuries. The accident reportedly occurred in the Lake Worth area. Like the previously described accidents, identities and circumstances remain under wraps as police conduct a thorough investigation.
