Collision at Miami International Airport Kills Pedestrian

A Miami-Dade, Florida collision left a pedestrian dead at the Miami International Airport on Friday, news sources report. None of the parties involved in the crash have been publicly identified. The 51-year-old victim reportedly died at the scene. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. It is unclear whether the driver will be charged. It is also unclear whether the victim’s family will file for damages.

According to reports, the accident happened at the Miami International Airport, though it is not clear what the time was. The victim and one of his coworkers had just returned to South Florida following a business trip, sources say. The victim was apparently crossing the street at a second-level crosswalk outside of departure concourses H and J when a white Chevy SUV struck him.

Reports say the SUV was not going fast at the time – it is believed to have been going less than 20 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The victim died at the scene of the accident, sources report.

Police say the victim was within the crosswalk at the time of the crash. Based on reports, the crosswalks are made especially prominent to hopefully prevent such crashes. “We have made every effort to make these markings very clear and as you can see they are marked pretty clearly,” an Assistant Director for Public Safety, Security and Communications reportedly told the press. It is not currently known how often such accidents take place at airports, where foot traffic is often high.

Police questioned the driver following the accident. So far, the driver has not been charged or cited. “At this time it does not appear that speed was a factor,” a Miami-Dade Police spokesperson apparently told reporters.

Pedestrians are oftentimes the victims of fatal crashes, since they have little to no protection from large vehicles. A few days ago, a Miami crash killed a pedestrian outside of the Miami-Dade College medical campus, sources report. The victim’s identity was not provided in reports; sources say he was a male in his 40s. The driver, whose identity is also undisclosed, has not been charged or cited pending the outcome of an official investigation.

Reports say the crash happened at the red-light intersection of Northwest 20th Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue in Miami. The Miami Dade College medical campus abuts one of the intersection’s corners. At around 7:20 p.m., the victim was struck by a car at the intersection; it is not clear whether he was crossing the street at the time.

A doctor and a nurse from the Miami-Dade college medical campus administered aid before the ambulance arrived, sources say. The victim was later taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead of his injuries shortly after arriving to the hospital, reports indicate.

The driver, who was apparently unhurt in the crash, stayed at the scene and answered the investigator’s questions. Traffic was restricted from entering the intersection for several hours while police inspected the scene.
