Lionel Orrego was arrested on August 31 for his alleged involvement in a fatal multi-vehicle DUI car crash in Miami that killed four people.
Orrego, 42, is charged with four counts of DUI manslaughter, three counts of DUI with property damage, two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury, and one count of resisting arrest with violence. He is being held in lieu of a $128,000 bond. It is unclear if he has acquired legal representation.
According to the arrest report, the fatal car crash occurred some time after midnight on Friday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near NW 62nd Street. An unidentified motorcyclist was involved in an accident on the highway and several drivers pulled over to offer assistance. Orrego, who was allegedly driving a white GMC Savana, ran over several of the drivers who stopped to help. Investigators allege that he was intoxicated at the time.
“Good Samaritans that were also traveling northbound on 95 stopped to assist, at which time a white van traveling northbound on I-95 collided into the vehicles and onto all those pedestrians that were trying to assist the motorcycle victim,” Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Joe Sanchez told the press.
After running into the bystanders and several vehicles, Orrego’s van crashed into a wall before coming to rest. Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius Carroll told the press that the emergency call was for five to eight wounded, but the situation was much more dire when they arrived.
“During the evaluation and triage of the patients, we found additional victims that were injured and it escalated to a level 2 mass casualty with a total of 11 people injured. Paramedics evaluated the 11 people; we identified seven that required transportation to the hospital,” Carroll said.
Four of the injured died at the hospital. According to a news release published by the Florida Highway Patrol, the deceased are Alice Ghani, 21; John Garzon, 25; Meryl Diaz, 27; and Randy Benjamin, 38.
Another DUI manslaughter case was reported in Palm Beach County last month. Yolexy Perez was arrested on July 22 after he purportedly struck and killed a man identified as George Dietel while intoxicated.
According to the arrest report, the alleged car crash occurred on Forest Hill Blvd west of Congress Avenue in Palm Beach. Perez was driving a truck when he ran over Dietel, 66, who was crossing the road. Dietel suffered serious head injuries and died shortly after the crash.
Officers who arrived at the scene reported that Perez appeared to be intoxicated. His speech was slurred and he appeared to be deliberately trying to walk normal. His breath allegedly smelled of alcohol even though he was chewing gum. Perez denied being drunk and twice refused to take a blood alcohol test.
