High school assistant basketball coach Michael Herbert Cohen was arrested on February 6 for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Cohen, 26, was an assistant coach for the girls basketball team as well as a behavioral and special needs assistant at Santaluces High School in Lantana, Florida.
He is charged with offenses against a student by an authority figure. His bond was set at $3,000, and he was ordered to stay away from the student, the school, or any minor, according to court documents. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the arrest report, Cohen began showing interest in the student, who was a player on the girls basketball team, in December 2017. He allegedly sent inappropriate text messages, nude pictures and videos to the student, who was 16 years old at the time.
In one of his messages, Cohen reportedly told the student, “I can’t say too much, when you graduate, I’ll tell you how I really feel,” the affidavit says. When the student asked him to tell her now, he reportedly replied, “I shouldn’t even be talking to you like casually.”
The student, who is now 18 years old, alerted school authorities about the relationship on February 6 and Cohen was arrested later that night after a basketball game. The affidavit claims Cohen admitted to kissing the student once in his car while he was driving her home and sending her nude pictures and videos on Snapchat and GroupMe.
The principal of Santaluces High School informed parents about Cohen’s arrest the following day, adding that he wouldn’t be returning to campus.
Another inappropriate relationship between a student and a teacher was reported in Oakland Park last week. High school teacher John Teti was arrested on January 31 for allegedly attempting to solicit sex from a 16-year-old student.
Teti, 41, was a teacher at Northeast High School in Oakland Park. He is charged with soliciting a romantic relationship while in a position of authority. His bond was set at $50,000. It is unclear if he has acquired the services of a lawyer.
According to the arrest report, Teti began showing interest in the student in October 2018. He reportedly attempted to build her trust by letting her skip classes to hang out in his classroom, offering to tutor her at home, and offering to pick her up from her home when she was late for school.
Teti also sent the student inappropriate text messages asking her to be his “teenage bride,” among other things. The student told her siblings about Teti’s behavior in December 2018 after she received a package from him containing snacks and food. She reportedly felt concerned that Teti knew where she lived. Her siblings eventually told their parents in late December, and they alerted authorities.
