Kreg Costa of Broward, Florida was arrested last Thursday on child pornography and related charges. He faces multiple charges including 29 counts of child pornography, lewd or lascivious battery, and illicit sexual conduct. The former Broward Sheriff’s Office sergeant allegedly spent four hours of his midnight shift watching illicit child porn and chatting with a teenager in California. During his first-appearance court session last Friday, Judge Michael Davis ordered Costa, 43, to be held in lieu of $250,000 bond.
If Costa manages to post bond, he is forbidden from seeing any of his five children without supervision. He also can’t go within 1,000 feet of a school or event with minors, contact any person under 18, or use the internet. Furthermore, he must wear a GPS tracker to ensure he remains in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties.
According to investigators, Costa purportedly spent hours of his midnight shift watching incest, bondage, and domination child porn involving young girls, and having cybersex with minors who he allegedly told to address him as “daddy.” When these allegations came to light, Costa was immediately suspended with pay on April 24. Records now show that he is no longer on police payroll after his arrest last week.
Costa has been a deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office for over 17 years; he was an electrician before he attended the police academy and became an officer in 1999. He slowly climbed the ranks of Broward Sheriff’s Office and eventually earned a sergeant position with an estimated salary of over $140,000 a year.
Costa’s assignments included working with the Internet Crimes Against Children task force, which strives to end the exploitation of children on the Internet. Records also show that he was the head of a youth sports organization called Sawgrass Youth Sports Sunrise until last year. It is unclear whether his time as the organization’s CEO is going to be investigated for this case.
