Karen Murphy of Lantana, Florida Killed, Tandy Poehl Injured in Boating Accident

Karen Murphy of Lantana, Florida was killed and Tandy Poehl was injured in a boating accident in the Intracoastal Waterway on Sunday, news sources report. Murphy, 42, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Poehl, 50, sustained shoulder injuries and has already been released from the hospital. Christina Jones, 43, was also in the crash, but reports did not specify whether she was injured. Police are currently conducting an investigation; it appears as though a problem with the boat may be at fault. It is unclear whether anyone will file for damages.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:00 Sunday afternoon in Manalapan, on the Intracoastal Waterway near the Ocean Avenue Bridge. Murphy and Poehl were passengers and Jones was driving the boat, a 1995 Dusky.

As Jones was driving by a nearby dock, the vessel suddenly took a sharp right-hand turn; it is still not clear how this happened. The jolt threw Jones and Murphy overboard and pushed Poehl towards the front of the boat. Poehl was able to get to the controls and pull back the throttle, sources say.

Murphy and Poehl were both taken to the hospital following the crash. Sadly, Murphy was pronounced dead upon arrival. Reports say Poehl had injuries to her shoulder; she has since been treated and released. The press did not say whether Jones was injured.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is currently investigating the crash. It remains to be seen whether a mechanical failure was responsible. Reports did not say who owns the boat or whether it was receiving proper maintenance.

Murphy was not the only South Florida resident to be killed while out on the water. Miami resident Luis Fernandez died Saturday after he leapt from his boat into the water for a swim and an ocean current carried him out to sea, sources report. Fernandez, 43, was found dead in the water. Police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident and will perform an autopsy to confirm that Fernandez drowned.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 5:45 Saturday afternoon. Fernandez was out on the Atlantic Ocean near the Carysfort Reef fishing with his 46-year-old girlfriend, who was not named in reports. Fernandez decided to take a swim and jumped into the water, straight into a strong current, sources indicate. Based on reports, Fernandez may not have been wearing a life vest when he jumped in.

When Fernandez realized what was happening, he snatched up a fishing line to pull himself back. Unfortunately, the line snapped. At that point, his girlfriend tossed him a life preserver, but Fernandez was already too far away. The woman later told investigators that she had never been on a boat before that day and had never learned how to drive one, so she was unable to saver Fernandez.

The girlfriend was apparently able to alert authorities, and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rushed to find Fernandez. The officers found Fernandez’s body nearby. Detectives are currently awaiting an autopsy report to confirm the cause of death.
