Isaac Cruz, a Fort Lauderdale, Florida 1-Year-Old, Injured in Hit-and-Run Collision

Isaac Cruz, a Fort Lauderdale, Florida 21-month-old, was injured in a hit-and-run collision on Tuesday after he ran into oncoming traffic, news sources report. The driver fled the scene following the crash; Cruz sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police are currently conducting an investigation and have not yet been able to identify the hit-and-run driver. Another driver is also being sought for a role in the incident. Charges are pending.

According to reports, the accident occurred at around 6:00 Tuesday evening near the intersection of Northeast 18th Avenue and Northeast 53rd Street. Cruz was outside of his home near the intersection when he began to wander towards the street. It was not immediately clear who was supervising the boy at the time.

A red Volkswagen Beetle was traveling towards the intersection near Cruz’s location moments before the accident. Reports say Cruz entered the street and walked into the path of the Volkswagen. The Volkswagen allegedly struck Cruz and fled the scene. Police say that a black pickup truck followed the Volkswagen away from the scene, though that vehicle did not hit the child.

Cruz sustained lacerations to his face and head trauma and was taken to Broward Health Medical Center. He is now in stable condition, reports say. Police later found surveillance video from a CVS Pharmacy on East Commercial Boulevard that shows the Volkswagen and black pickup truck parking in the store’s parking lot moments after the crash. Sources say the drivers exchanged words in the parking lot before departing.

Police are now asking for help in identifying the drivers of the Volkswagen and the black pickup. According to reports, detectives have seized the red Volkswagen, but have so far been unable to identify its driver. Anyone with additional information should call the Fort Lauderdale police hotline.

Cruz was not the only Fort Lauderdale resident involved in a traffic incident this past month. Marjorie Kershaw Jones of Fort Lauderdale died following a traffic incident Monday, reports say. Jones, 87, experienced a medical issue while driving and lost control of her car before she was able to pull over. She later died at an area hospital. The Florida Highway Patrol conducted an investigation and the cause of Jones’s death has not been released to the public.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 2:00 Monday afternoon as Jones was northbound in her 2013 Honda Accord on Interstate 95. Jones was driving to the Boynton Beach Boulevard exit when she experienced a “medical issue” that caused her to lose control of her car. Jones veered into the emergency lane and onto a grassy shoulder, where she came to a stop.

Reports say Jones was awake and speaking when rescue crews arrived on the scene. She was taken to Bethesda Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later. A spokesperson for the FHP declined to say what medical issue Jones had experienced while driving. The spokesperson also declined to comment on whether Jones was injured when she lost control of her car.
