Ian Alex Collazo Killed While Riding a Bicycle in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida

Ian Alex Collazo of Oakland Park, Florida was killed on November 13 after he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on a busy intersection in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.

According to the police report, the accident occurred some time after 4 p.m. Collazo, 48, was cycling west on Northwest 39th Street when he approached a red light at the intersection of Northwest 31st Avenue. Collazo was in the middle of the intersection’s northbound lane when he was struck and killed by an Infiniti EX35.

The driver of the Infiniti was identified as Marvel L. Nelson. Authorities say Nelson, 44, had the green light when the accident occurred. Nelson’s vehicle rammed into the left side of Collazo’s bicycle, throwing him onto the hood and into the windshield of the car. Collazo then fell off the car to the right.

Collazo was pronounced dead by on the scene. Nelson remained on the scene and was cooperative with police. The investigation is ongoing.

Another accident was reported in Coral Springs on November 16, but this one involved a pedestrian. Ruben Nieves of Margate, Florida was fatally struck by a vehicle as he was crossing West Sample Road late at night.

According to the police report, Nieves, 52, was hit by a Toyota Corolla driven by Adrian Simmons. Simmons, 24, was westbound when he struck Nieves. Witnesses reportedly tried to perform CPR on Nieves, but he died on the scene.

Brad McKeone, the Coral Springs Police Captain, told news sources that Nieves did not cross at an intersection and was wearing dark clothing. He said pedestrians “should try and cross at the actual crosswalk where it’s well lit and . . . [has] some type of traffic control device for both vehicles and pedestrians.”

To help reduce road fatalities, Coral Springs Police recently launched an initiative to educate pedestrians and cyclists on the importance of crossing roadways safely.
