Guillermo García, Mayre López, and Taymi González of Miami, Florida Arrested for Medical Insurance Fraud

Guillermo García, Mayre López, and Taymi González of Miami, Florida have been arrested by federal agents for their alleged connection to a group that staged fake car crashes in Miami-Dade. The group allegedly did this in order to defraud auto insurance companies by providing unnecessary medical services to the “victims” of the accidents.

García, 46, López, 39, and González, 35, have all pleaded not guilty to the charges and are awaiting trial. News sources did not name lawyers for any of the three defendants.

According to federal court records, the ring operated in the two-year period between December 2012 and September 2014. Its members allegedly conspired to file bogus claims to insurance companies for treatment at a medical clinic called Rehabilitation Tomasa, which offers chiropractor services and therapeutic massages.

The indictment names López as the owner of Rehabilitation Tomasa. Together with González and García, she allegedly helped to prepare the fraudulent insurance claims that justified the car accident victims’ treatment at her clinic. The three defendants also purportedly “trained” the victims on what to say to insurance representatives in order to avoid suspicion.

Once they reportedly received reimbursements from auto insurance companies, García, López, González, and other unnamed defendants would deposit the checks into bank accounts they control. They would then convert the proceeds into cash to enrich themselves and to pay recruiters, participants, and clinic employees.

The indictment says in the two-year period the three defendants ran the alleged scam, they received payments totaling $1,695,543.46 from several insurance companies. Affected companies reportedly include Infinity, State Farm, Travelers of Florida, Metlife, Geico, Progressive, and Allstate Insurance Company. It is unclear why federal agents waited until this month to bust the alleged fraud ring.
