Gene Martin Lumsden of Fort Lauderdale, Florida was arrested on July 18 for allegedly using numerous internet connections throughout the city to transmit child pornography images.
Lumsden, 47, is being charged with promoting sexual performance by a minor, computer pornography involving a child, and transmission of child porn on an electronic device. He posted $32,500 bail and was released from jail on Thursday. The judge who set his bond and terms of release forbade him from using the internet in any way and contacting any minors. The press did not name an attorney for Lumsden.
According to the arrest report, police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that led them to Lumsden. He allegedly used his Skype account on January 1, 2017 to trade child pornography images of an infant and a boy aged between 4 and 6.
The New Year’s Day incident set off the investigation that led to his arrest on Wednesday. Police are reportedly still investigating Lumsden and he may face additional charges.
“The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the forensic electronic examinations,” Detective Tracy Figone of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department told the press on Friday.
Another child pornography incident was reported in Broward County last month. Former teacher Ronald Sherman was arrested on June 21 for allegedly sharing child pornography images on his Tumblr.
Sherman, 55, is being charged with multiple child pornography-related charges, including possession of child pornography and promoting sexual performance of a child. He was ordered held on $240,000 bond. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the arrest report, authorities started investigating Sherman after receiving a tip in January 2018 from Tumblr employees about a user who was sharing child pornography on their account. The pictures reportedly depicted underage girls nude and in sexually suggestive poses.
Police executed a search warrant at Sherman’s Pompano Beach home in January. Sherman allegedly admitted that he owned the Tumblr account in question, but he stopped using it after it was deactivated for “inappropriate activity.”
Sherman also told detectives that he only shared content posted by other users and he wasn’t interested in the “kiddie porn thing,” the report said. When shown images of the pornography, he reportedly said that he thought the pictures were artistic and not sexual in nature.
He allegedly reposted more than 4,000 pornographic images and videos before his Tumblr account was deactivated. 800 of the images are considered “child erotica” and depict nude or scantily-clad minors between 2 and 12 years old.
Sherman was a teacher at Apollo Middle School since 2006. He resigned for “personal reasons” in June 2018. It is unclear what grade he taught at the school.
