Fort Lauderdale, Florida Trolley Crash Sends Four to the Hospital

A Fort Lauderdale, Florida crash involving a trolley, two other vehicles, and a building injured four on Wednesday, news sources report. Information regarding the victims’ identities was not immediately available at press time. All four victims were taken to an area hospital; one was on trauma alert, sources indicate. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine what factors led to the accident. So far, police have not filed any charges. It remains to be seen whether any of the victims will file for damages.

According to reports, the accident occurred around 6:40 Wednesday evening at 600 Seabreeze Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. A trolley and two other vehicles were involved in an accident outside of a nearby building, sources indicate. The collision caused the trolley to crash into a building, carving a hole in the building’s side. Details on what caused the accident are still unavailable.

No one in or around the building was hit, reports say. Four trolley passengers were injured and taken to the Broward Health Medical Center; one victim was placed on trauma alert. An update regarding the victims’ conditions was not immediately available at press time.

It is too early to determine whether driver error, incapacitation, or illegal substances may have played a role in the crash. It also remains to be seen whether the collision has jeopardized the building’s structural integrity.

Broward County is among the largest counties in South Florida. As a result, the county is home to many thousands of traffic accidents every year. In 2010, there were 28,233 traffic crashes in the county, which produced 179 fatalities and 20,540 injuries, records from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles indicate. The number of crashes in 2010 was up from the previous year, which had 25,957 crashes, 189 fatalities, and 20,249 injuries.

In other news, a Lake Worth woman was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by Joni Bentz on Monday, reports say. Information regarding the 52-year-old victim’s identity was not immediately available following the incident, although she was reportedly lying or kneeling in the road at the time of the crash. Bentz, 26, has not been cited. Police are currently conducting an investigation to conclude the exact cause of the deadly accident.

According to reports, the incident occurred around midnight Monday on Lake worth Road, east of Congress Avenue. For reasons that have yet to be determined, reports say the victim was either kneeling or lying in the right lane of Lake Worth Road. Bentz was in her Chevy Malibu traveling in the same lane when she approached and struck the victim. Based on the time of night, Bentz may have well failed to see the victim until it was too late.

Bentz stopped immediately and remained at the scene while paramedics arrived. Based on reports, the victim appears to have died at the scene. Police are withholding the victim’s identity until her next of kin is notified of the fatal accident. So far, police seem to be treating this fatality as an accident and have not filed charges.
