Fort Lauderdale, Florida Driver Strikes Two Pedestrians; One Dead

A Fort Lauderdale, Florida driver struck two pedestrians on Friday, leaving one dead and the other critically injured, news sources report. Information regarding the victims’ identities was not immediately available following the incident. Police have identified the driver, though it is unclear whether he was arrested or charged with a crime. An investigation is ongoing. So far, it is unclear whether the injured victim or the family of the deceased will file for damages.

According to reports, the incident occurred Friday evening on Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. The boulevard has four lanes and a center turning lane. It is not yet known when on Friday the crash happened. Many of the details, including the vehicle make and model and whether the pedestrians were legally crossing the road when they were struck, have yet to be released.

Sources say the driver initially hit one pedestrian near the intersection of Northwest Seventh Avenue on Broward Boulevard. Upon realizing that he had struck that pedestrian, the driver allegedly made a U-turn in order to return to the accident site. As the driver was making the U-turn, he reportedly struck another pedestrian near the intersection of Northwest Fifth Avenue on Broward Boulevard.

The first pedestrian reportedly died at the scene; the second was rushed to the Broward Health Medical Center with critical injuries. An update on the injured victim’s condition was not immediately available at press time.

Police are now working to find out more about the crashes. “It is all convoluted right now, we have a lot of things we are trying to sort out,” a Fort Lauderdale Police spokesperson is quoted as saying in reports. Detectives reportedly say they are searching for surveillance footage that will hopefully show what occurred during the accidents.

Sadly, pedestrians are involved in car crashes on an almost daily basis in South Florida. Last month, Henry A. Paz of Hialeah drove his car into a bus bench, injuring Jonathan Manuel Cordero and killing one other man, reports say. Cordero, 24, sustained critical injuries in the crash and as a result had both his legs amputated.

Paz, also 24, fled the scene of the collision but was arrested shortly afterwards on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with serious injuries and leaving the scene of a crash with a death. He was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail; it is unclear whether he qualified for bail or hired legal aid.

Sources say the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. at a bust stop. Cordero and the other victim were waiting for the bus when Paz lost control of his vehicle and crashed into them. The collision critically injured Cordero and killed the other victim. Cordero was taken to the Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center. Meanwhile, Paz reportedly drove away from the accident site. After obtaining a description of Paz’s vehicle from witnesses, officers were able to track down Paz and arrest him. It is not yet clear what caused Paz to lose control of his vehicle.
