Davie, Florida: three people were injured Wednesday when a sports utility vehicle drove off the side of the Florida Turnpike, reports indicate. The crash occurred after one of the vehicles sideswiped the other. Three victims were taken to the Broward General Medical Center with unspecified injuries. Reports did not provide the identities of those involved or mention whether any of them have retained injury lawyers. An investigation into the incident is ongoing; at this time, it is unclear what caused the crash or whether either driver is at fault.
Reports say the accident occurred around 4:45 Wednesday evening on the Florida Turnpike near the eastbound lanes of I-595. The Turnpike is a multi-lane expressway that runs throughout Southern Florida, and many drivers find it difficult to navigate. As such, the turnpike is home to a fair number of accidents each year.
The precise details of the crash, such as the make and model of the cars involved and the speeds at which they were traveling, are not yet known. It is known that both vehicles were on the expressway when one reportedly sideswiped the other. The collision sent the SUV through the Turnpike’s guardrail and down a grassy embankment, where it came to a rest on its right side, sources say. It is unclear whether the driver of the other vehicle remained on the scene.
The Davie Fire Rescue team arrived on the accident site and rushed three victims to the Broward General Medical Center with unspecified injuries. It appears that at least some of the victims were passengers in the SUV. Their conditions were still unknown as of Wednesday evening. The Florida Highway Patrol is looking into the collision. It is unclear whether charges will be filed.
In other accident-related news, James Campbell of Cantonment, Florida was killed in a freak accident Monday when a dog hopped into a van, stepped on the accelerator, and backed over him, reports say. The accident occurred while Campbell’s partner, 68-year-old Iris Fortner, sat in the driver’s seat of the van with his door open. Campbell, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing and it is unclear whether Fortner will be charged in the accident.
Reports say the accident occurred Monday as Campbell and Fortner were pulling into the driveway of their home. Fortner brought the van to a stop in the home’s driveway and Campbell got out to open a metal gate. According to reports, Fortner opened her door to get a better view of Campbell as she backed up. At that point, the couple’s boxer bulldog jumped into the vehicle and pushed the accelerator. The unexpected acceleration shot the van over Campbell.
Escambia County paramedics arrived on the scene to give aid to Campbell; however, the man had been trapped under the vehicle for some time and was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the accident is ongoing. Fortner reportedly told investigators that she had attempted to stop the vehicle before it hit Campbell but was unable to do so. Fortner reportedly sustained minor injuries in the crash. It is not known whether the dog was harmed.
