Daniel Hiatt Injures Jean Chabert in West Palm Beach, Florida Fairgrounds Collision

Daniel Hiatt injured Jean Chabert in a West Palm Beach, Florida car accident, news sources report. The accident occurred in the South Florida Fairgrounds parking lot. Chabert, 73, was on foot at the time of the accident; he sustained critical injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Hiatt, 62, has so far not been charged with a crime. Police are currently conducting an investigation to gather the complete details of the accident. It is unclear whether Chabert will file a lawsuit.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Saturday at the South Florida Fairground in West Palm Beach. That day, the fairgrounds were hosting “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,” an event where people display and bid on fancy cars. The event started at 4 p.m., so Chabert may have been on his way to the show when the crash happened. So far, the South Florida Fairgrounds has not commented on the collision.

Chabert was walking across the fairground’s parking lot at around 4:00 Saturday evening; at the same time, Hiatt was driving through the parking lot in his 2009 Nissan SUV. According to Hiatt’s comments, as Hiatt approached Chabert from behind, Chabert “abruptly” turned and walked into the path of his SUV. The front of Hiatt’s vehicle struck Chabert on his left side.

Paramedics rushed Chabert to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Doctors have since moved him into serious but stable condition. It is currently unclear whether police will charge Hiatt with a crime. It also remains to be seen whether Chabert will file for damages.

Palm Beach County’s bustling roads play host to a number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians each year. Records show that 550 pedestrians were injured and 21 killed in Palm Beach County traffic accidents in 2010. While those numbers are high, they are an improvement over previous years, possibly because of increased safety measures.

Chabert was not the only one injured in a Florida collision this past week. Joaquin Osario was injured after he was struck by Patricia Ramos in Labelle, Florida, reports say. Osario, 24, was riding his bicycle at the time of the collision. His injuries were minor and he is expected to survive. Ramos, 25, has not been charged with a crime; however, police are still investigating the accident. It is unclear whether Osario will file for damages.

According to reports, the accident occurred around 8:30 Saturday evening near the intersection of Caloosa Estates Drive and Country Road 78. Ramos approached Osario from behind in her 2009 Chevy Cobalt; sources say Osario’s bicycle did not have lighting or any reflective devices and Osario was not wearing reflective clothing.

The front of Ramos’s vehicle struck the cyclist from behind. According to the FHP, the force of the collision threw Osario against the windshield of the vehicle and onto the road’s shoulder. It is not clear whether Ramos spotted Osario before the accident.

Ramos remained at the scene and cooperated with police following the collision. Paramedics transported Osario to the Lee Memorial Hospital. Reports say he sustained minor injuries in the collision. It does not appear as though Ramos was hurt.
