Cassandra Jean Grammel of Boynton Beach, Florida Arrested for DUI Hit-and-Run

Cassandra Jean Grammel of Boynton Beach, Florida was arrested Sunday after she was accused of drunkenly running a red light and hitting pedestrians Daniel and Kelly Heneghan and their two young children, news sources report. Daniel and Kelly sustained non-life threatening injuries and are set to make a recovery, sources indicate. The children were not injured. Grammel was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of hit and run and driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury. He bail was set at $10,000. The press did not specify a criminal defense lawyer for Grammel.

According to reports, Grammel is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, but moved to South Florida recently. Grammel, 24, does not have a history of driving citations in Florida, though reports say she only just obtained her Florida license a few weeks ago.

The victims and Kelly and Daniel Heneghan. The Haddon Township, New Jersey couple was walking with their one-year-old son and four-year-old daughter in a stroller at the time of the crash, sources indicate. It is unclear if the family was in South Florida on vacation or for some other reason. After the crash, police gave temporary custody of the children to relatives while the parents recuperated.

The incident occurred at about 10:40 Sunday evening at the intersection of Gleason Street and East Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, sources say. Grammel was reportedly drunk when she ran the light in her Honda Accord, crashing into Daniel and Kelly. Either the force of the collision pushed the stroller into a nearby bush, or one of the parents acted quickly and pushed the children to safety. Either way, the children were not struck, sources report.

Unfortunately, Daniel and Kelly were not able to get out of the way. They were left lying in the street. Reports indicate that Grammel initially stopped, only to flee soon after. She allegedly crashed into street signs a few minutes away from where the first accident occurred and was unable to go further.

A person who saw the crash gave police a description of Grammel, sources say. The officers reportedly found her in her vehicle at the second accident scene. Reports say she was weeping, had bloodshot eyes, and smelled of alcohol. When asked, Grammel reportedly said she had a few mixed vodka drinks before getting behind the wheel. A breath test later showed she had a blood alcohol content of .263 and .265, much higher that Florida’s limit.

An officer reportedly ordered Grammel out of her vehicle to complete a roadside sobriety test. Grammel gave a “blank stare” as she performed the actions, reports say; she allegedly had difficulty standing and almost fell down during the test.

Daniel and Kelly were taken to the Delray Medical Center following the crash. Daniel sustained leg injuries that were considered critical and remained in the hospital, sources state. Kelly has since been released. The press did not say whether Grammel was injured.

“[Grammel] stated multiple times that she was sorry [about the accident]” a police spokesperson reportedly said. Thankfully, the crash did not take a tragic spin and Daniel, Kelly, and their two children should all survive.
