Carlos Padron of Miami, Florida was involved in a fatal accident with a pedestrian Thursday, news sources report. Information regarding the victim’s identity was not immediately available following the incident. The victim died at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, sources indicate. Padron was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI. It is unclear whether he qualified for bail. No criminal defense attorney appears to have spoken on Padron’s behalf as of yet.
According to reports, the accident occurred around 7:00 Thursday night at the intersection of Northwest 7th Avenue and 20th Street in Miami. Few details of the crash are available at this time; for instance, it is not known what kind of vehicle Padron was driving, nor is it known whether the victim was crossing the street at a crosswalk the time of the crash. In any case, Padron allegedly hit the victim, who was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center in the Jackson Memorial Hospital. The victim passed away at the hospital, according to the press.
Padron reportedly remained at the scene of the crash and consented to take a Breathalyzer test, which showed he had a blood alcohol level of .337 – over four times the 0.08 legal limit for operating a motor vehicle. In addition, detectives found alcohol in Padron’s vehicle, sources say. “There [were] extensive tests that were done to the driver and we have a very high alcohol level,” a Miami Police spokesperson reportedly said. “… fire rescue was needed to respond to the scene because of the state that he was in.” An investigation is ongoing.
Sadly, this was not the only fatal pedestrian accident in Miami this past week. On Friday, a collision at Miami International Airport ended in the death of a 51-year-old pedestrian, sources report. Details regarding the victim’s identity were not available at press time. Detectives are looking into the crash to determine what exactly occurred. No charges have yet been filed, and it is uncertain whether anyone will file a suit.
Sources say the incident occurred at an unspecified time at the Miami International Airport. According to reports, the victim had just returned to South Florida from a business trip. The victim left the airport on foot and was crossing the street using a crosswalk outside the concourses H and J at the airport when he was struck by an SUV, sources indicate. A spokesperson for the public safety department said the crosswalks were marked to be especially obvious to drivers. “We have made every effort to make these markings very clear and as you can see they are marked pretty clearly,” the spokesperson reportedly said.
Based on reports, the SUV was going around 20 mph at the time of impact. The victim reportedly died of his injuries at the scene of the accident. Detectives spoke with the driver after the crash, and there have not yet been any citations or charges yet. “At this time it does not appear that speed was a factor,” a police spokespersons supposedly said regarding the crash.
