Antonio Jackson of Miami Gardens, Florida Arrested for Reckless Driving With Damage to Property After a High-Speed Chase With Police

Antonio Jackson of Miami Gardens, Florida was arrested by police on Monday after a televised high-speed chase on Interstate 95 that lasted for almost 30 minutes and ended with gunfire. Jackson, 24, was identified by family members who watched the pursuit on television.

Jackson faces charges for reckless driving with damage to property, attempting to elude a police officer, and driving with a suspended license. He was booked into Miami-Dade County Jail on Monday night, but was released on Tuesday after posting a preliminary bond of $15,000. It is unclear if Jackson has acquired the services of an attorney.

According to news sources, Jackson was driving a Chrysler rental in a residential neighborhood when he allegedly waved a gun at someone on a public bus. Miami Gardens police began pursuing Jackson being informed of the incident.

Jackson’s mother, Angela Rivera, told news sources that her son allegedly called her during the chase to tell her that he was all right and was coming home. Jackson also reportedly told his mother that he was afraid the police would shoot him if he stopped his vehicle.

In an effort to get him to stop, Jackson’s parents suggested he pull over at a gas station where he could surrender himself to the police with witnesses present. Jackson didn’t heed this advice and instead attempted to drive his vehicle home.

An unidentified Miami Gardens police officer did attempt to shoot at Jackson through the front windshield of his vehicle, but the bullet missed. The shot did cause Jackson to crash into a police vehicle at the corner of Fifth Court and Miami Gardens Drive, where he was arrested.

The case is being treated as a police-involved shooting, but the officer who shot at Jackson has not been identified and Miami Gardens police have yet to say if the shooting was justified. Police did say that they are investigating the shooting and are currently waiting for a statement from the officer who fired the shot.
