Adam Daszkal, Boca Raton, Florida High School Student, Arrested for DUI Manslaughter

Adam Daszkal, a Boca Raton, Florida high school student, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly crashing into 64-year-old motorcyclist Camil Paquet while under the influence of marijuana earlier this year, news sources report. Paquet, a Pompano Beach resident, passed away at Delray Medical Center shortly after the accident. Daszkal, 17, was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter this Wednesday; he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail bond. The press did not specify an attorney for Daszkal.

According to reports, Daszkal is a student at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek. Daszkal was 16 at the time of the accident, reports say. It is not yet known how Daszkal’s arrest will affect his ability to continue taking classes at the high school. So far, the school has not released a statement regarding the allegations.

Sources say the crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. on March 23, 2013. Daszkal picked up two friends in his 2008 Infiniti and drove to the beach that day, reports indicate. En route, sources say Daszkal and a friend shared a marijuana cigarette. As Daszkal looked for a parking spot, he allegedly made a U-turn on Palmetto Park Road and crashed into Paquet’s Harley Davidson.

The force of the collision threw Paquet from his motorcycle; he hit the ground headfirst and rolled into the street. Paquet, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Delray Medical Center. Sadly, Paquet was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital. Daszkal and his friends do not appear to have been injured.

Daszkal appears to have remained at the scene of the accident. He reportedly admitted that he had smoked a marijuana cigarette before the crash. Police arrested him on Wednesday after a blood text confirmed that Daszkal had marijuana in his system, sources indicate. It is unclear whether anyone else in the car will be charged with a crime.

Beaches, resorts, and nightclubs draw thousands of tourists to Broward County every year. As a result, the county’s streets are often humming with activity – and accidents. In 2010, there were 28,233 traffic crashes in the county, which produced 179 fatalities and 20,540 injuries, records from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles indicate. The number of crashes in 2010 was up from the year before, during which 25,957 crashes, 189 fatalities, and 20,249 injuries occurred.

No one is exempt from DUI laws. Earlier this week, Larry Laverde, a Miami-Dade County police officer, was apprehended after he allegedly drove under the influence, crashed into Fernando Monch’s vehicle, and fled the scene, sources report. Laverde, 30, was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, DUI, and failing to render aid. It was unclear whether he qualified for bail or hired legal aid.

Reports say the accident occurred Sunday morning at the corner of 127th Avenue and Southwest 56th Street in Miami. Laverde was speeding in a marked police vehicle when he crashed into Monch’s vehicle, sources indicate. Monch sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
