Miami Cop Jorge Sanchez Killed, Two Injured in Multi-Car Accident

Miami Police Chief Rodolfo LlanesTraffic officer Jorge Sanchez of Miami, Florida was killed in a multi-vehicle accident yesterday that left two people seriously injured and sent a dozen others to the hospital. Sanchez, 53, was on his motorcycle when he was struck by an SUV on a left-turn lane, causing a domino effect that damaged five other vehicles and injured several people.

According to the police report, the accident took place at around 1:40 p.m. on the intersection of 137th Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street. Several vehicles were heavily damaged and Sanchez’s motorcycle was found destroyed almost beyond recognition four lanes from where the incident occurred.

News sources report that people from nearby businesses who witnessed the accident tried to save Sanchez, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. It reportedly took Miami-Dade Fire Rescue hours to secure the scene and find out how many people were involved in the crash and needed medical assistance.

The accident is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol, and so far, no arrests have been made. The names of the injured, including the driver who caused the accident, have also not been released. The intersection and several blocks around it had to be shut down for most of the day as investigators searched for clues and cleaned up the mess.

Sanchez joined the police department when he was 32 and was an officer for 21 years. He was scheduled to retire in 17 months in early 2018. He left behind a mother, a fiancée, and three children, including his son, police officer Jorge Sanchez.

Miami Police Chief Rodolfo Llanes said Sanchez “served with honor and distinction for 21 years” during a press conference on Tuesday night. The Miami Police Department also released a statement offering its condolences and prayers to the friends and family of the deceased veteran officer.
