James Campbell, Former Jupiter, Florida Police Officer, Arrested for Aggravated Assault and Criminal Mischief

11-11-16 CampbellRetired police officer James Campbell of Jupiter, Florida was arrested on charges of simple assault, criminal mischief, and aggravated assault after he allegedly kicked in a restaurant door and injured an unnamed truck driver.

Campbell, 51, was ordered held in lieu of a $7,000 bond by Circuit Judge Joseph Marx during a hearing last Thursday. The judge also ordered Campbell to have no contact with the people involved in the case. It is unclear if he has bonded out of jail.

According to the arrest report, the alleged incident occurred on the morning of November 8. The unidentified truck driver was leaving an election polling station to get food with his wife when he reportedly noticed a woman tailing his vehicle while swerving and shaking her fist at him. The woman purportedly ended the confrontation after giving the truck driver the middle finger at a stop sign and driving off.

Police later identified the aggressive driver as Campbell’s wife. She told police that the truck driver had cut her off on the road and yelled and threatened to kill her children before physically attacking her vehicle. The police report states that while investigators did notice some damage on Campbell’s wife’s vehicle, there were some “discrepancies” in her version of events. The truck driver denied her allegations.

After the unusual road-rage incident, the truck driver went on to a restaurant in Abacoa Plaza. He told police that he noticed the vehicle from earlier pull up alongside a black BMW in the restaurant’s parking lot. The woman who was driving the vehicle was having an argument with the BMW’s driver, who was later identified as Campbell.

Surveillance footage from the restaurant parking lot reportedly shows the truck driver walking in a “relaxed” manner while Campbell seemed to be “aggressive.” Campbell was allegedly arguing with his 32-year-old wife when he yelled at the truck driver and threatened to “shoot him in the head.”

Fearing for his safety, the truck driver went inside the restaurant, but Campbell allegedly followed him, kicked the door open, and attacked. Authorities say surveillance footage shows the Campbell’s wife trying to push Campbell away, but Campbell only stopped when the truck driver began recording him with his phone.

Police identified Campbell by the license plate recorded by the truck driver. He reportedly denied ever being at a restaurant in Abacoa Plaza on the day of the incident during a phone interview. When he was informed that surveillance footage showed him at the restaurant, he allegedly changed his story and said he and his wife were attacked.

Campbell is a former Jupiter police officer who was forced to retire after he was wounded in the line of duty. Records show that he has been arrested before; in 2015, his wife called the police after he allegedly attacked her with a knife, but no charges were filed in that case.
