Florida Senate Candidate Antoaneta Mihaylova Iotova of Broward County Arrested for Grand Theft

Antoaneta Mihaylova IotovaAntoaneta Mihaylov Iotova, a Florida Senate candidate for District 34 in Broward, was arrested on October 7 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after a customs agent noticed an open warrant for her arrest.

Iotova, 50, allegedly leased two apartments in Hallandale Beach she didn’t own and pocketed the rent money. She is being charged with two counts of grand theft and was released the following day after posting a $2,000 bond. It is unclear if she has hired legal representation.

According to the arrest report, the alleged incident took place in March this year. Iotova purportedly leased two apartments owned by a bank to tenants for a total of $2,900. A few days after the new tenants moved in, she reportedly kicked them out and never refunded their rent money.

Iotova is the Republican candidate in the Florida Senate race for Broward County’s District 34, which covers most of the county’s eastern side from Hollywood to Deerfield Beach. Her opponent in the race is Democrat Gary Farmer.

When contacted by news sources about the incident on Thursday, Iotova said she was arrested for something she didn’t do and that “they imagined this case.” The Broward Supervisor of Elections Office said the arrest won’t affect her chances of election.

Another grand theft case was reported in Broward County last week. It involved Broward Sheriff’s Office sergeant Ivan Roiz, who was arrest on September 22 for allegedly falsifying work hours for an off-duty detail and fraudulently receiving over $1,000 in payment. Roiz, 47, faces charges for grand theft, official misconduct, and organized scheme to defraud. He was released on the bond the next day. News sources did not name an attorney for Roiz.

According to the police report, Roiz purportedly submitted invoices to Weston Homeowners Association for off-duty work from July to September. An investigation by the sheriff’s office public corruption unit revealed that Roiz was never on off-duty detail during those months.

Roiz was reportedly paid over $1,000 by the homeowners association. A spokesperson for BSO told news sources that Roiz has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. Roiz had worked for the sheriff’s office for 14 years.
