Michael Kai James of Hollywood, Florida was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly called the police to say he had killed his wife and he intended to shoot anyone who approached his home. James, 27, faces premeditated murder and arson charges. It is unclear whether bond has been set for James, and news sources did not specify if he had acquired the services of a defense attorney.
According to the arrest report, police went to the James’ North 72nd Avenue home at around 3:15 a.m. after he had purportedly called emergency services to confess to the murder of his wife. When the officers tried to enter the house, they found James had barricaded himself inside and he allegedly threatened to shoot them if they came any closer.
James eventually came out of the house, but he was acting in a strange manner and that led to a confrontation which ended when the officers shot him. He was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital where his condition was stabilized. None of the officers involved in the confrontation were injured.
After James was taken into police custody, a SWAT team entered the house and found his wife, 27-year-old Latoya James dead from what appeared to be multiple stab wounds in the neck, head, and back. Her body was found on a burning mattress in a smoky bedroom that had a strong odor of accelerant–implying that her husband had intended to burn the body and commit arson.
It is still not clear whether James actually murdered his wife, but investigators handling the case strongly suspect that the murder was premeditated. New sources did not specify if a first-appearance court session has been scheduled for James.
