Sylvester Perrone of Broward County, Florida was arrested last week and is charged with eight counts of sexual battery. Perrone, 19, is accused of allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl he met at a church camp last summer.
Before his arrest, Perrone was a youth counselor for the Church by the Glades in Coral Springs. According to the arrest report, Perrone allegedly met the 14-year-old girl at the church’s United Camp 2015 last summer, where he was a counselor for the middle school students.
Joy Oglesby, a spokesperson for the Broward Sherriff’s Office, told news reporters that Perrone purportedly gained the girl’s trust during summer camp and looked for vulnerabilities that allowed him to allegedly take advantage of her sexually.
The Broward Sherriff’s Office said the girl’s parents found out about the alleged sexual relationship and brought evidence to the police that led to Perrone’s arrest. The arrest report claims that the sexual relationship began last September with sex acts allegedly happening once a week either at the church, her home on 400 Lakeview Drive, or another address.
The Church by the Glades released a statement condemning the alleged sexual battery and offered support to the victim and her family. The church also offered to fully cooperate with the authorities to make sure justice is served.
Perrone is currently being held at Broward County Jail. News reports did not mention any bail or specify a lawyer for Perrone.
