Warren Thomas Zilka, a Coral Springs, Florida teacher, was arrested Friday after he was accused of sending a 14-year-old student sexually explicit emails, news sources report. Zilka, 43, was booked into the Broward County Main Jail on charges of transmitting material harmful to a minor and unlawful transmission of obscene material. He has since been released on an unspecified bail bond amount. The press did not specify an attorney for Zilka.
According to reports, Zilka taught at Paladin Academy in Weston before switching to Imagine Charter School of Broward, where he teaches middle school students. Following these latest charges, Imagine Charter School placed Zilka on leave pending the outcome of the case. So far, the school has remained mum regarding the allegations. Detectives are now attempting to discover whether there are more victims, and are also asking anyone with any more information to contact their office.
Reports say the incident began in May. Zilka allegedly used his school-issued computer to write and send around 100 emails to a 14-year-old girl, sources say. Reports say that a handful of the emails contained questions asking the girl if she would perform certain sex acts with Zilka. The student turned the emails over to police on Monday, sources say.
On Tuesday, detectives confronted Zilka regarding the emails. According to reports, Zilka confessed to emailing the victim the messages from his school-issued computer. Zilka was subsequently arrested.
Zilka was not the only South Florida teacher accused of sending sexually illicit messages to a student as of late. Earlier last month, Broward County teacher Stevie Glasspool was apprehended after she allegedly sent underage teens inappropriate messages on Facebook, sources report. Glasspool was taken to jail on charges of soliciting a child for unlawful sexual conduct using a computer. It is not known how her trial is progressing.
According to reports, Glasspool formerly worked at Mavericks Charter High School in Pompano Beach as a social studies teacher. At the end of the last school year, she accepted a job at Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science, sources indicate. The academy has since released a statement, saying, “[Glasspool] is on unpaid leave pending further investigation. We do background checks on every employee prior to them entering the classroom and they are not permitted to go into the classroom unless the background check is clear. Parents have been informed.”
Reports say Glasspool contacted a number of teens around the ages of 15 to 17 via Facebook. Glasspool allegedly told the minors things like, “Your body is amazing,” “I don’t want you to fall in love with me but I also don’t want you to hit it and quit it,” and “I have marijuana for us to smoke.” As of now, reports do not suggest that Glasspool ever engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior with a minor.
At least one victim decided to show the illicit messages to his parents. The parents showed the alleged messages to the police and, based on that evidence, officers reportedly went to Glasspool’s Boca Raton home and placed her under arrest.
