Sunrise, Florida Driver Crashes into Apartment Building

A Sunrise, Florida driver was injured Monday after he reportedly drove into his apartment complex, news sources report. Information regarding the victim’s identity was not immediately available following the incident. He was taken to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries, sources say. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. It is too early to say whether police will file charges.

According to reports, the accident happened around 11:30 Monday morning at the Water Bridge apartment complex, which is located in the 5900 block of De Lago Circle. Reports say the driver lives at the apartment complex. It is unclear whether he was leaving or arriving at home when the crash occurred. The complex has not released a statement on the accident.

While the details surrounding the crash are still somewhat of a mystery, reports say the driver’s SUV collided with the apartment complex. The vehicle got stuck in a hallway, squeezed between a stairwell and an apartment door, sources indicate. It apparently burst into flames after entering the hallway.

Iris Melendez, who lives on the second floor of the complex, reportedly rushed outside when she hear a “big bang” cause by the crash, as did a number of other residents. Neighbors apparently worked to free the man; one bystander used a fire extinguisher to smash the passenger-side window to free him, sources say.

Rescue workers soon arrived, and the driver was taken to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known. It does not appear as though any other residents of the complex were hurt in the crash. The investigation is being carried out by the Sunrise Police Department, sources say. It remains to be seen whether the crash jeopardized the apartment complex’s structural integrity.

Due to the close proximity of roads, parking lots, and buildings, crashes with permanent structures happen on a regular basis. Late last month, a Miami collision ended with a car ricocheting off the side of a tractor-trailer and crashing into a Wendy’s restaurant, sources report. The drivers’ identities were not provided at press time. The results of a police investigation into the incident have not yet been released.

Reports say the accident happened around 4 a.m. on a Saturday at the intersection of Northeast 79th Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Miami. The intersection is regulated by a red light, sources indicate. Reports say the Wendy’s fast food restaurant is located right on the intersection.

Sources say a Honda Elantra was heading north on Biscayne Boulevard and a tractor-trailer was heading east on Northeast 79th Street. The two vehicles collided at the intersection, reports indicate. It is still unclear who violated the right-of-way.

The Elantra lost control and drove into the Wendy’s restaurant, mangling a guardrail. Thankfully, no one in the structure was hurt, and the building was saved from serious damage by the guardrail. It is unclear whether the crash endangered the Wendy’s structural integrity.

According to reports, the driver of the Elantra sustained minor injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer does not appear to have been injured.
