Roberto Cumbay of Davie, Florida was killed Thursday after he was struck by Henry Cervantes while crossing a road, news sources report. Cumbay, 57, reportedly died at the scene of the accident. Cervantes, 24, also of Davie, was not injured. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. It is too early to say whether Cervantes will be charged or cited. It also remains to be seen whether Cumbay’s family will file for damages.
Reports say Cumbay and Cervantes are neighbors, though it is not clear whether they were acquainted. The accident occurred around 10:30 Thursday evening on Davie Boulevard, near the corner of Southwest 44th Terrace, which is apparently close to the residences of the two men.
Cumbay was on a stroll a few minutes away from his home when he started to cross Davie Boulevard at the intersection of Southwest 44th Terrace, sources say. It is not yet clear whether he was using a crosswalk. Cervantes was westbound down David Boulevard in his 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser at the time. Reports say Cervantes drove into the turning lane to make a left-hand turn onto Southwest 44th Terrace. Cumbay, who was reportedly walking through the turning lane, was hit.
Cumbay was pronounced dead at the crash site approximately 10 minutes after the accident, sources indicate. Cervantes has not been charged or cited; it appears as though he is cooperating with investigators. It is unclear whether speed or poor lighting played a role in the fatal crash. Broward Traffic Homicide detectives are currently investigating the details of the crash and have requested that any witnesses contact Broward Crime Stoppers.

Cumbay was not the only South Florida pedestrian killed this month. On Friday, a Miami-Dade resident was struck as he walked across a street outside the Miami International Airport, news sources report. The victim, 51, died at the scene of the crash. Police are still investigating the incident. The driver does not yet appear to have been charged, and the family members of the deceased do not appear to have sought legal action. Neither the name of the driver nor the name of the victim has been publicly released.
