Delray Beach, Florida Wrong-Way Collision Sends Three to the Hospital

A Delray Beach, Florida wrong-way collision sent three people to the hospital on Tuesday, news sources report. Information regarding the victims’ identities was not immediately available following the incident. All three injured parties were taken to the Delray Medical Center with various injuries. Police are currently conducting an investigation into the matter. It is too early to tell whether charges will be filed. It is also unclear whether anyone will file for damages.

According to reports, the collision occurred around 9:20 Tuesday morning in Delray Beach, on Military Trail not far from Linton Boulevard. While the exact details of the accident are currently unclear, reports suggest that one car was headed north in the northbound lane of Military Trail and another vehicle was headed southbound in the same lane. Police have yet to determine why one driver was going the wrong way.

A passenger and driver in one of the vehicles and the driver of the other vehicle all sustained injuries and were taken to the Delray Medical Center. The extent of the injuries of the victims was not immediately known. Police shut down the northbound lanes of Military Trail following the accident, and they have since been reopened the whole street. The Delray Beach Police Department is asking anyone with additional information to contact them.

Car accidents remain the number one killer in Florida. According to records by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 235,461 crashes resulting in 2,444 fatalities in Florida in 2010. The records show that 13,410 of those crashes and 123 of those fatalities occurred in Palm Beach County. The leading cause of crashes are driver negligence, failing to yield, speeding, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the department says.

In one example of the latter, Delray Beach resident Christopher Borrego allegedly drunkenly collided with another driver at a Military Trail intersection, sources report. The 21-year-old victim, who was not identified in reports, apparently sustained injures. Borrego, 22, was later taken to the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of fleeing police, hit and run, reckless driving, and DUI involving property damage. His bail was set at $34,500. It is unclear whether hired legal representation.

Reports say the crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m., where Military Trail intersects with Lake Worth Road in Greenacres. Traffic at that intersection is controlled by a red light. Borrego was heading south of Military Trail when he ran the red light and turned left onto Lake Worth Road, sources allege. He then purportedly collided with the victim’s Honda. The extent of the victim’s injuries was not specified in reports.

Borrego allegedly fled the scene following the crash. Police arrived on the scene shortly after, at which point Borrego returned to the scene. An officer spotted Borrego’s beaten-up car and began tailing him. An alleged high-speed chase followed. Borrego’s car reached speeds of 100 mile per hour as it weaved through traffic, reports say. Thankfully, no one else was injured before the chase was brought to an end and Borrego was apprehended.
