Dania Beach, Florida Painter Injured in Fall

A Dania Beach, Florida painter was injured Friday after a three-story fall from a ladder at a condominium complex, news sources report. Information regarding the victim’s identity was not immediately available following the incident. He sustained critical injuries in the fall and was taken to the Memorial Regional Hospital. Officials are currently conducting an investigation into the incident. It is too early to tell whether the victim will file for damages.

According to reports, the incident occurred at the Sheridan Ocean Club Condos on Southeast Seventh Avenue. The fancy, multi-building condo has a number of amenities, including its own dog park and pool. Reports did not say whether the victim worked for the condominium complex or for a third-party contracting service.

At around 1:30 Friday afternoon, the victim was atop a three-story ladder, painting a portion of the condominium. While the details of what happened are still a bit sketchy, sources say the victim fell from the ladder to the paved sidewalk below. The victim sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Memorial Regional Hospital in nearby Hollywood; an update on his condition was not immediately available at press time.

So far, police and officials with the Sheridan Ocean Club Condos have remained mum regarding the incident. It is unclear whether the fall came because of a failure to follow normal safety measures associated with painting high areas.

Many employment positions put workers at risk for injury: on-the-job accidents are responsible for thousands of injuries and deaths every year in the United States. Earlier this year, Port Everglades workers Kenneth Krason and Mark Freeman were both killed in an on-the-job accident, sources report. A third worker, Thomas Fischer, was purportedly critically injured.

The accident happened when the scissor lift fell over. Police are investigating the construction accident to determine whether negligence played a role. So far, there is not indication that a lawsuit has been filed.

Reports say the incident took place on March 15 at Port Everglades. The victims were working together to repair a portable gangway that connects Terminal 1 to cruise ships. At some point, a scissor lift toppled over; it is not known whether the victims were working on the lift and fell off, or whether they were injured when the lift fell onto them.

Sadly, Krason and Freeman died at the scene, sources say. Fischer apparently suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. A CEO spokesperson for Port Everglades said regarding the accident, “We treat safety as our No. 1 priority here. We have training programs in place. We are trying to understand exactly what happened here today.”

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office gave control of the investigation to their homicide unit. It remains to be seen whether that investigation will determine if negligence played a role in the tragic accident. “On behalf of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, I want to extend a heartfelt sympathy to the families,” a police spokesperson reportedly said.
