Jeffrey Wright and Alexis Longo, a Plantation, Florida couple, was arrested Tuesday after they were accused of assaulting Dunkin Donuts employee Rajay Hall because they were unhappy with their order, news sources report. Wright, 27, and Longo, 22, were booked into the Broward County Main Jail. Wright was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; Longo was charged with simple battery. Wright’s bail bond was set at $20,000, while Longo’s bail was set at $1,000. It is unclear whether the couple had hired a criminal defense lawyer.
According to reports, Wright works as a security guard and has a license to carry a concealed weapon. “During the course of the altercation… you retrieved your firearm, a 9mm Taurus handgun with seven rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber,” a county judge reportedly said during Wright’s hearing. It is unclear how his arrest will affect Wright’s ability to continue carrying a concealed firearm.
Reports say the incident occurred at around 1:00 Tuesday evening at a Dunkin Donuts on West Oakland Park Boulevard in Plantation. Wright and Longo originally went through the drive-through and Longo ordered an iced vanilla coffee, sources say. Longo was not pleased with the way the coffee tasted, so the couple parked and entered the store, intending to speak with a manager. The couple ended up getting into an argument with Hall instead, sources say.
Surveillance cameras inside the store captured the incident, which apparently began with Hall and Wright arguing near the door. A customer tried to separate the couple from Hall, but the verbal fight allegedly became physical when Wright punched Hall.
Wright and Hall continued to throw punches and move further into the restaurant, where they knocked down a poster. Wright then removed his handgun from his holster and began pistol-whipping Hall on the head, sources allege. “This all happened in front of the customers at Dunkin’ Donuts,” a county judge reportedly said.
Hall recalled how Wright had him in a hold while hitting him, reports say. “I didn’t even realize he was hitting me with the gun. I thought he was just hitting me with his fist and I was just punching him back,” Hall purportedly said. While Wright struck Hall with the butt of the gun, Longo allegedly yelled, “Shoot him! Shoot him!”
The surveillance video reportedly shows Wright holstering his gun while other employees attempt to placate him. Meanwhile, Hall went into a bathroom and locked the door, sources say. The peace was nearly broken when Hall reportedly heard Longo telling Wright that he should have shot Hall. Hall apparently tried to leave the bathroom upon hearing this, but patrons were able to calm him and convince him to remain in the restroom.
Police soon arrived to the store and arrested Wright and Longo, sources say. Afterwards, Hall commented on the scuffle, saying he never did learn what was wrong with the coffee. “You’re not talking to me like I’m a dog,” he purportedly told reporter. “If [Longo] told me [her coffee] needed more sugar, it wouldn’t have elevated to that point.”
