Fort Lauderdale, Florida Collision Injures Four

A Fort Lauderdale, Florida collision injured one driver and three motorcyclists on Wednesday, news sources report. Information regarding the victims’ identities was not immediately available following the incident. Two of the motorcyclists sustained critical injuries and were taken to Broward Health Medical Center. The driver and third motorcyclist sustained minor injuries; the driver was hospitalized, while the motorcyclist declined treatment. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. So far, police do not appear to have filed charges. It is unclear whether anyone will file for damages.

According to reports, the crash occurred around 8:00 Wednesday evening on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale near the Sunrise Boulevard exit. Interstate 95 cuts through many of South Florida’s largest counties and is typically bustling with traffic and is one of South Florida’s most deadly highways. With ten lanes, five going in each direction, the Interstate is a hot spot for traffic accidents. From 2004 to 2008, there were a projected 1.73 fatal accidents per mile on Interstate 95, online sources indicate.

The details surrounding this latest accident have not yet been released. Preliminary reports say three motorcycles and a car were involved in a crash, which critically injured two of the motorcyclists and left the third with minor injuries. The driver sustained minor injuries as well. The two critically injured motorcyclists and the driver were taken to the Broward Health Medical Center. The third biker declined to be hospitalized. An update on the victims’ conditions was not immediately clear at press time, and it is not yet clear whether human error, alcohol, or some other factor caused the accident. The crash shut down all lanes near the site until 9:30 that evening.

Accidents along the Fort Lauderdale portion of Interstate 95 are frequent and dangerous. Earlier this month, Aubrey N. Platt ran into Karim Albert Jahil Afraim as he fixed a flat tire on I-95 in Fort Lauderdale, reports say. Afraim, 35, was outside of his car in the right lane of the interstate at the time 25-year-old Platt struck him. Afraim suffered critical injuries and was rushed to the Broward Health Medical Center. An investigation is ongoing; thus far, there do not appear to have been any charges or citations, nor has anyone filed for damages.

Reports say the accident happened around 8:26 Sunday evening on an Interstate 95 overpass in Fort Lauderdale. During that time, some extreme whether had been ripping through Fort Lauderdale, reducing visibility on the interstate, sources say. Afraim was traveling on the highway when a tire on his 2005 Toyota reportedly went flat. He pulled over in the right lane, exited his car, and started to fix the tire, sources indicate.

Meanwhile, Platt approached the same overpass in her Nissan Altima, reports say. She reportedly failed to see Afraim stopped alongside the road until the very last moment. “[Platt] took an evasive action to avoid the vehicle and inadvertently struck the driver,” sources say. Following the crash, Afraim was rushed to the Broward Health Medical Center. An update on his condition was not immediately available.
