Aubrey N. Platt struck Karim Albert Jahil in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday, news sources report. Afraim, 35, was changing a flat tire in the right lane of the interstate when he was struck by 25-year-old Platt’s car. Afraim sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center. Police are currently conducting an investigation. So far, there have been no charges or traffic violations issued. It is unclear whether anyone will file for damages.
According to reports, the incident occurred on an Interstate 95 overpass in Fort Lauderdale. Interstate 95 has ten lanes, five going in each direction, and is divided by a concrete barrier. The interstate runs through several large South Florida cities, and as such is home to frequent traffic accidents. Between 2004 and 2008, there were an estimated 1.73 fatal accidents per mile on Interstate 95, online sources indicate, This makes it one of South Florida’s deadliest highways.
This latest accident happened around 8:26 p.m. Sunday. Fort Lauderdale was experiencing a bout of extreme weather at that time, limiting visibility on the interstate, sources say. Afraim was on the interstate when one of the tires on his 2005 Toyota went flat. He reportedly pulled to the side of the road, got out of his vehicle, and began repairing the tire.
At the same time, Platt was driving on the overpass. She approached Afraim’s vehicle from behind in her Nissan Altima. Reports say she did not see Afraim’s stopped vehicle until it was too late. “[Platt] took an evasive action to avoid the vehicle and inadvertently struck the driver,” a police press release reportedly said.
Afraim was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center following the accident. His injuries were deemed critical; an update on his condition was not immediately available at press time. Platt does not appear to have been injured. Based on reports, she remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with police. Sources indicate that the weather likely contributed to the accident.
Afraim was not the only victim of a Fort Lauderdale car accident this past week. On Friday, a Fort Lauderdale driver struck two pedestrians, killing one and critically injuring the second. Information regarding the victims’ identities was not immediately available at press time. The driver stayed on the scene of the crashes and is cooperating with authorities.
Reports say the accident happened late Friday on Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. While the details of the crash have not yet been released, sources say the driver hit one pedestrian near the intersection of Northwest Seventh Avenue on Broward Boulevard. The driver made a U-turn at the intersection of Northwest Fifth Avenue on Broward Boulevard to return to the accident site, and as he did, he allegedly hit another pedestrian.
According to reports, the first pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center with critical injuries, and an update on their condition was not available at press time. The identities of the persons involved in the crash have not yet been released to the public.
