Sarra Heike and Richard Barrow were involved in a Coral Springs, Florida collision on Friday, news sources report. Heike, 22, died while en route to the hospital; Barrow, 18, was not injured. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. There have not been any charges or citations thus far. It is not yet known whether Heike’s loved ones will file a suit.
According to reports, the accident occurred at around 4:00 Friday afternoon on North University Drive near the intersection of Northwest 25th Court in Coral Springs. University Drive is a large, six-lane highway that spans from the Sawgrass Expressway all the way to the Port Everglades Expressway. In 2011, University Drive was host to 390 crashes and 181 injuries. It was one of Broward County’s most prolific areas for traffic accidents in 2011, records show.
Sources say Heike was attempting to cross North University Drive on her bicycle when she was struck by Barrow’s northbound Chevrolet Malibu. It is too early to tell whether speed, failure to yield, or negligence from either party played a role in the tragic crash. Barrow stopped at the scene and waited for police to arrive. Heike was air-rushed to Broward Health North, but she died of her injuries while en route to the hospital. Police have opened their hotlines and have asked anyone with additional information to contact them immediately.
In a similar case earlier this month, Lacey Daniels of Tamarac was involved in a deadly collision with a bicyclist on Tuesday, reports indicate. Daniels, 41, did not sustain injury in the crash. The bicyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead; his identity is being withheld until police notify his family of the death. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine what factors led to the fatal crash. There have not yet been any charges or citations.
Reports say the crash happened around 7:30 Tuesday evening on North University Drive near the corner of Landing Street. The victim was on his bicycle at the corner of Landing Street, waiting to cross North University Drive, while Daniels was northbound in his Ford Ranger on North University Drive. Daniels ran into the victim at the corner, reports say. It is not yet known whether the victim was in the process of crossing the street when the accident happened.
The victim was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center; unfortunately, he was pronounced dead of his injuries shortly after his arrival. Daniels remained at the scene and appears to be cooperating with the police. It was not clear at press time whether speed or negligence played a role in the accident.
Broward County residents often take advantage of Florida’s sunny weather by participating in outdoor activities, such as bicycling. While bicycling is a fun and healthy sport, bicyclists have to share the road with much larger vehicles. This combination can sometimes be tragic. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 549 bicyclists were injured, five fatally, in traffic accident in Broward County in 2010.
