Miami Beach, Florida Hit-and-Run Collision Leaves Bicyclist with Injuries

A Miami Beach, Florida hit-and-run collision left a bicyclist with injuries on Sunday, news sources report. Information regarding the victim’s identity or the extent of his injuries was not immediately available following the incident; sources say he was taken to the Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine what happened and have not yet identified the hit-and-run driver. It remains to be seen what charges or citations will be filed. It is also unclear whether the victim will file for damages.

According to reports, the accident occurred around 7:30 Sunday evening on the MacArthur Causeway. The MacArthur Causeway extends across Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach. The causeway has six lanes; the opposing lanes are mostly separated by a grassy median, but some portions of the causeway are made up of large bridges that stand tall over the bay. It is unclear on what part of the causeway the alleged hit-and-run accident occurred.

Reports say the victim was bicycling along the westbound lanes of the causeway when he was struck by a Scion TC. Following the accident, the driver fled the scene, sources allege. Police have so far been unable to find the driver. The police department has listed an all-points bulletin in an effort to locate the driver, who is believed to have been traveling in a silver or gray-colored Scion TC with the license plate number 820LRT. Reports say the vehicle is missing its right side-view mirror and has damage to its front.

The victim was taken to the Jackson Memorial Hospital after the accident; an update on his condition was not immediately available at press time. Reports were unable to say whether the victim’s injuries were life-threatening.

Bicyclists have little protection from cars, and when this does occur, their injuries can be fatal. Last week, bicyclist Sarra Heike was killed when she was struck by driver Richard Barrow in Coral Springs, sources allege. Heike, 22, was pronounced dead while being transported to a nearby hospital. Barrow, 18, was uninjured. Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine what factors led to the fatal crash. So far, there have been no charge or citations. It remains to be seen whether Heike’s family will file a suit.

Reports say the incident happened around 4:00 Friday afternoon on North University Drive in the proximity of Northwest 25th Court in Coral Springs. Heike was trying to cross North University Drive on her bicycle when Barrow’s northbound Chevrolet Malibu hit her, reports say. It remains to be seen whether any other factors played a part in the deadly accident. It is not yet clear who had the right of way at the time of the crash.

Barrow parked his vehicle at the scene and waited for police. Heike was placed on a helicopter and rushed to the Broward Health North clinic; sadly, she was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital. Police say they are asking for anyone with more information regarding the incident to contact their hotlines right away.
