Hary Charles of Oakland Park, Florida Arrested for Culpable Negligence

Hary Charles of Oakland Park, Florida was arrested Thursday for leaving a firearm within reach of children, news sources report. Charles’s 13-year-old stepson reportedly found the gun and accidentally shot his 6-year-old sister in the chest; luckily, the girl survived the incident. Charles, 27, was booked into the Paul Rein Detention Facility on charges of culpable negligence for allowing a child access to a weapon that caused injury. His bail bond was set at $2,500. The press did not specify a defense attorney for Charles.

According to reports, Charles had left the children home the evening of the incident. Charles allegedly left his .38-caliber revolver and ammunition in his bed stand, though it is not clear from reports whether the weapon was actually loaded. It is not known whether Charles regularly locked up or hid the firearm from the children and had simply forgot to put it away on May 4.

That day, when the children were home alone, the 13-year-old boy and six-year-old victim located the unsecured firearm. At around 7 p.m., neighbors heard a gunshot from Charles’s home, reports say. Moments later, the 13-year-old boy ran out of the house asking for help. Reports say a neighbor returned to Charles’s home and discovered the girl bleeding from a gunshot wound to her chest.

The victim was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center. Initially, her condition was listed a critical, and doctor performed emergency treatment. However, the victim quickly improved and, after only two days, was elevated to “good condition.” It is not clear how her recovery is going now.

Police who investigated the incident said the shooting appears to have been an accident; however, an investigation is ongoing. It is unclear how the allegations will affect and custody Charles may have over the two children. No legal repercussions appear to have been pursued regarding the preteen’s actions.

Child neglect, with or without the presence of a firearm, is a common cause for arrest. Christopher Daniel and Kia Salichs of Miramar were arrested Wednesday after they were accused of leaving their two-year-old and one-year-old children home alone for several hours, reports say. Daniel 21, and Salichs, 20, were booked into the Broward County Main Jail on charges of child neglect without great bodily harm. It is unclear whether they qualified for bail or hired legal representation.

According to reports, Salichs and Daniel have at least two children together, including a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old. The incident occurred Wednesday after Daniel and Salichs allegedly left the young children alone. Reports did not specify where the parents had gone. The pair later told police that they had left the children in the care of an elder sibling.

A neighbor reportedly witnessed someone at Salichs and Daniel’s home throwing objects out of a window and called police. Authorities responded to the house and located the two small children alone inside. Officers later spoke with Salichs and Daniels, who cited the babysitter; however, that sibling was not at the house when officers first found the children.
